"Do they really go for 2-3k?" For two or three grand, American? For a "mint condition" JVC RC-M90, "King Of Classic Boomboxes" contender that it is? Uh, yah. (And then some LOL) A minute or two on eBay will dauntingly prove that point. :-D[/QUOTE]

Had to dust off this heavy hitter. Deep bass and beautiful sound on the Crown 980. Crown's flagship 1 piece.

Letting the Big Fisher 492 get some sun. Found this one locally. Very happy with this heavy beast.

That Fisher is near perfect in design, with just a hint of blue to pull it all in. I'm sure these spent most of their lives in doors, since they weigh as much as a small moon! :w00t:

Chris the 492 is a beautiful design. Definitely not meant to be carried...weighs a ton. Got this one from the original owners daughter after he passed away. She says he loved this radio and you can tell. It's perfect. I assured her it would be well cared for.

As others have been telling you, mellymelsr, those are fine-looking stereos you've got there. You say it was the single-piece "flagship" model by Crown back in the day? Maybe I can believe it -- especially after seeing one owned by Jensis Welt demoed on YouTube. (Er, you wouldn't know the gentleman, would you? Peppers his German with some English words... :hmmm:) One of the VU meters was probably kaputt (yeah, had to do the "German words" thing), but it sounded loud and clear, especially in radio tuner mode (playing "Alejandro" by the dubious Lady Gaga and then "Rock Me Amadeus" by the late Falco). Rewatching parts of the video clip confirms that, sadly, the cassette playback did not sound splendid. The music isn't bad; it sounds a bit like a cross between Jeffrey Osborne's vocals and those of another good early- or mid-'80s balladeer (maybe Ricky Astley, though he started "charting" in 1987 or so ...) No, methinks it's the WOW and flutter that's either hobbling that '980's deck or it's an imperfect tape deck of some other sound system with which the song was recorded. (Can't be the video quality of the upload, though it's not great .)

But fear not, mellymelsr! :-D All my talk of a flawed '980 doesn't sneeze at your fine-looking find. You Crown CSC 980 is indeed a beauty.

And as for your Fisher PH-492? Well, suffice it to say that, while watching a certain Jay Boettcher modelling his own '492, probably in June 2014, I writhed in excitement: "I got to get me one of these!" Now, that's not rather likely to happen: a quick check of eBay minutes ago confirms my suspicions: the few Fisher PH-492s being sold on that website are way beyond a fella's financial reach -- even when sold "For Parts" :sadno:.

But, ah that "champagne"-accented façade! Ah, that tasteful tweeter and woofer chrome trim! That sensibly fade-off tuner light! (Less bulb burnout risk.) That weighted tuner knob, deliciously sending the tuner needle smoothly across the dial! Those five green tuner LEDs that telemetrically flicker back and forth! That commanding size and heft! (Might be a liability come placement time :-D.) Those reassuringly responsive graphic equalizers! (Yes, one's rewatching the video to recall it all LOL) And that performance of that symphonic piece on audiocasette sounded respectable, too, whoever the composer was. The LINE IN mode also piped audio in loud and clear. (Music from the rock band Genesis and from R&B singer Shannon; wonder what that tablet thing was that Mr Boettcher briefly DJ'd with?)

Again, sir, two beauties there. Do dust them good if storage has shed a bit much on them, but don't sun them that much. Don't think even those fine finds need much vitamin D ...

This alas isn’t mine but belongs to another collector on here. Did the pick up for him.
A remarkable little box. Really crisp with great separation.

Those boxes are astounding. They look small and boring, but they sound as good as an M9994. The bass is so strong you need to put felt tape onto the battery door and spare tape compartments.

Hopefully without being “Go away”-ed (shrug): say it ain’t so! A “Golden Age,” shortwave-tuning Sanyo without fine-tuning? Did Rudey 1999 (noticed his postings count, of course) just happen upon an example of Sanyo’s occasional experimentation with “no fine-tuning” boomboxes in the Eighties? Or did the owner insist on such a find? (I watched this clear clip twice. Yep: no noticeable fine-tuning control seen. Puts it right next to my Helix HX-4633N, which I fired up today.)

The owner will soon demo (or already has demoed) this unit playing or recording to cassette, yes? After all, Reli has tantalised us with talk of this model’s “astounding” sound quality (no bass shyness) that rivals its vaunted, robust, respectably chromed big brother, the Sanyo M-9994K ...

Well, thanks for sharing the video. And I suppose the other collector thanks Rudey for doing “the pick up for him.”

This will always be one of my favorite boomboxes...the Victor M70 in JVC Blue. Stunning...

Would that it tuned shortwave, like the JVC-branded model does (in four bands, if it’s the “-C” or the “-JW” version). But that shade of blue (is it azure?) makes it eye-catching and memorable. (As does the good audio, one hopes.)

Anyway, the Victor brand and all the Japanese text for nearly all the controls tell us that it’s a “Japan only” model. But long-term boomboxers (or those familiar with an RC-M70’s layout) outside Japan will learn the control placement soon enough. Thanks for sharing.

Just giving the Panasonic RX-DS690 a shakedown run for Tony.

Looks good, skippy1969. Uh, you mean the Panasonic RX-DT690, right? There's this gentleman on YouTube who mislabelled his RX-CT980 as an RX-DT980. So I told him: not sure Panasonic turned out a model badged as an RX-DT980. (Not with those minisystem-like looks, at any rate. Anyway, he promptly corrected the video's title after I sent him a message. He also reassured me that a JVC PC-V88, that was in a faceoff with the Panasonic, is indeed a three-piece stereo.)

Yes, I've thought of late about going after an RX-DT690, but the version I'd prefer -- that tunes shortwave -- is likely too pricey in good condition. (Shrug)
