The clock wouldn't be any use without the AC frequency changeover switch. I have a few synchronous clocks in my collection that were sold in the US and Canada and when connected in the UK, read only 50 seconds to each minute.
But it was a wise marketing move to fit that and probably cheaper to fit the extra regulator in the clock than engineer different models for the American continents and the entire rest of the world. Indeed the only 60Hz source that's commonly available here is found in some inverters as fitted to provide 13 Amp 250 VAC outlets in cars and camper vans that don't come with mains hookups for use when pitched up on caravan sites.
I've seen a boombox (using the term loosely) with a lamp but a boombox with a built in answerphone? That's a new one on me!

This one arrived in the mail today......

Auto Sonic TR-230S(2) - freshly opened and not even given a wipe down so excuse the dust.autosonic.JPG

Can't say I've seen another in my travels.

Dan.

Yes, John, and another main reason is that in Japan itself they use both 50 and 60 Hz depending on the region (Eastern ones tend to use 50 Hz while western regions use mostly 60 Hz) - I was a sort of surprised to learn that.

Wow! Just when I think every gadget in the world must have been posted somewhere on one of the tech fora I visit, I come back to this thread and there's more crazy stuff.
That's interesting about the Japanese mains, are they all AC or do they still use DC in some rural areas? Even though here, in the UK, the decision to standardise AC for mains electricity was made before Victoria was off the throne, some DC areas still have their infrastructure in place and in older properties in these areas, it's possible to see all sorts of proprietary vibrators from different eras that householders and businesses installed so they could use the then-new AC devices as these devices gradually replaced "universal" equipment. DC was still in use as recently as the 1960s in this region, later in some very remote parts of Scotland.

That PM industries multi function gadget is only really lacking a telephone by comparison with a lot of new devices that perform all of its functions. I like that a lot.

I haven't seen any info about DC usage there, though I didn't do the thorough search.
Information about the UK mains is interesting - thank you for sharing.

This Japanese domestic box puzzled me when I saw it for the first time.
I still couldn't make out where the front and back were meant to be. :-D
It's your turn now. :-)

Not a box really but IMO it's worth taking a look at.

When I first saw small pics on auction in Japan my first thought was that someone had mistakengly put a compact submachine gun in a case on auction :-) but at a closer look it turned out to be a Matsushita portable
FM autoreverse tape deck with Dolby, Loudness, etc.

Weird looking thing from 70s, huh?
