The clock wouldn't be any use without the AC frequency changeover switch. I have a few synchronous clocks in my collection that were sold in the US and Canada and when connected in the UK, read only 50 seconds to each minute.
But it was a wise marketing move to fit that and probably cheaper to fit the extra regulator in the clock than engineer different models for the American continents and the entire rest of the world. Indeed the only 60Hz source that's commonly available here is found in some inverters as fitted to provide 13 Amp 250 VAC outlets in cars and camper vans that don't come with mains hookups for use when pitched up on caravan sites.
I've seen a boombox (using the term loosely) with a lamp but a boombox with a built in answerphone? That's a new one on me!
