Not necessarily a fan of C1's but that looks soooo clean, it could be the 1980's!
im not a fan either, buuut that also has a bit of a backstory.
I’ve always been fascinated by boomboxes being a huge fan of old school hip hop, and I started building 80s hifi for the first time for a “quarantine project” (as I called it). This led me into the world of vintage home and portable audio devices, which got me to the point I finally decided I had to have a boombox.
I quickly went from infatuated to obsessive. I searched for my first boombox for months and all I found was either total junk, way overpriced, or wouldn’t ship. I have an awful habit of finding new hobbies and becoming a collector, because I always feel like I “HAVE TO HAVE ALL OF THEM” whenever I get passionate about something, but I promised myself: ONLY ONE BOOMBOX. So I decided it had to be something among the best of the golden era of boomboxes.
after realizing LL Cool J’s JVC was never going to be obtainable (at least without selling a car) I expanded my search. Without getting into boring details, I stumble onto this C1 in an auction I could tell would end very cheap. I google it and find a photo of LL himself holding one (word to my boomboxery display photo). I figured if it was good enough for him, it would be good enough for me, and won the auction for $43.
2 days later? I stumble onto a FB marketplace listing for boomboxes, VERY vague though. I hit him up about shipping not knowing any of the models, and he tells me 19 boxes (ended up being 21) for $500. I drove 500 miles round trip to get his collection and it was well worth it. I fell in love with a mint RX-5150 in original box, which is my main piece as of now, and I’m looking to offload most (all?) of the others to pursue the collection I said I wouldn’t start.
back to the C1: it arrives a few days ago. It literally does nothing for me now lol. I have much much better in my collection, but it’s still cool to see such an immaculate example of a 30+ year old machine. I have no reason to keep it now, sadly.
i just find it funny how quickly it went from being the only boombox I’d need to being not worth keeping
