One of my favorite radios to look at. I could stare at this one all day. Still in shock that I found it for $20. Very solid bass and a warm overall sound. The Toshiba BomBeat 40.

Head-shakingly amazing that you could find a “Prince Of Boomboxes” (or is that “King Of Boomboxes”) unit like this apparently mint-condition Toshiba RT-S913 for pennies on the dollar. “Pennies on the dollar” is probably no exaggeration; I seem to remember someone ending an auction for a '913 on eBay some years ago because the highest bid by then -- dare I suggest over two thousand dollars? -- was not a bold enough try. (And have you seen the a.redchenko70 eBay listing? My jaw literally dropped minutes ago.) This model is all the more memorable (apart, of course, from the atypical three shortwave bands) because the façade of the stereo is as “chrome rich” as the pleasingly angular rear cabinet is “chrome stark.”

Enjoy good music with it. Maybe an audiotape of some Rachmaninoff? (It was playing on an audio-only Music Choice channel minutes ago.)

What's the make and model of the right-hand boombox? You know, the one with the interestingly "cross barred" tweeters, the slim cassette keys and the cool-looking VU meters? Of course, it won't eclipse the "Prince of Boomboxes" -- or, to some, the "King Of Boomboxes" -- cred of the Toshiba RT-S913 next to it, but still ...

(And do mind how precariously they perch, sir. :sadno:) But enjoy good music with them, anyway.

This JVC M90 was restored many years ago and chronicled in depth in Boomboxery. Superduper handled the insides, and I took care of the outside. Tweeters were upgraded as were their capacitors. Caution provided the chrome kit. Without Boomboxery this project would not have been possible...so many in this group have help with so many of my projects. Can never thank you enough. Bobby you created something in Boomboxery that literally makes dreams come true...

Does anyone know the make and model of the boombox on the right in the photo' of message post 4653 of this thread? It’s the “knob top” machine next to the Toshiba RT-S913. (At least, I call it a “knob top” unit LOL) The stereo has some interesting points to it, such as the white VU meters, the “cross barred,” squared tweeters, the chrome trim “bookending” the tuner dial …

You mean "Diatone," right, Reli? I recently finished watching a near-five-minute YouTube clip uploaded by KAI, presumably in Japan, featuring the Diatone JR-711. Perhaps I wrote with a shade of flippancy in implying that the boombox in message #4653 will never match or surpass the Toshiba RT-S913 (positioned next to it) in audio quality (cassette playback, radio clarity, recording to cassette, etc.) or in sheer visual or tactile appeal.

I didn't see the side or rear panels of this stereo in the first two YouTube clips of it that I watched. But I saw photos of those parts in Google Images results minutes ago. Even though the 18 watts of input seem modest, there definitely is a build quality and a solidity that even more famous models (and more famous brands overall) cannot take away from. It's nice to have the image of it shared with the BoomBoxery community.

I half-wish that the text of the controls were in English and not Japanese so I would be less daunted if I were to handle that unit. But I understand that it's a Japanese market model, complete with a 100V AC power supply and an analog tuner that starts at 76 MHz, suitable for the broadcast market in Japan (and perhaps certain other Asian nations).

Perhaps the entire brand was made only for the Japanese market. That would include the vinyl-record turntable players with wood casing that I glimpsed in YouTube’s search results thumbnails. Still quite collectible, yes?

Yes it's Diatone, and yes it was only sold in Japan to my knowledge.

What's funny is that 20-30 year old Diatone home floor-standing speakers fetch thousands of dollars on Ebay, I have no idea why. Looks? Brand snobbery? I'm pretty sure there's lots of speakers that sound better for less than half the price.

As for 18 watts, that box can easily beat thousands of other boxes with 30-40 watts on the label. And remember those labels only tell you the consumption, not the actual output.

Thanks Bobby. Those clings still look good as new. Really great quality.

I shall be giving this Sanyo MX-620 a whirl over the weekend.
Member Geoff (Nikonfoo) gifted this to me when he was over in London with his wife a couple of years ago.

What a great buy HR!
Just curious, what year was that box released? It has a late 70's vibe to it but I'm not sure.
