This story is just tooooooo long to type up but I want to say THANK YOU to bklyn sound for helping me finish off the deal and ship these to me. He went WELL out of his way to make sure they arrived safely and I owe ya man, big time ;-) .

This also could be the last "craigslist" long-distance dealing I will do for a LONG time  . :dunce: because you can't always trust these crazy people that aren't educated enough to wipe their own asses let alone give you a REAL condition report :-O  .

Basically there was a listing for a JVC M71, basic description, stock internet photo, "normal scrapes and bumps". I called the seller to find out more and he ended up telling me that he had a SECOND M71 in storage that he wants to sell too! :w00t:   .

Great, I'll take a chance I guess and got ahold of Jimmy (bklyn sound) to finish the deal for me and meet up with the seller.

Now the 2 GOLD M71s are here and are in "no worse" shape than I was expecting after Jimmy gave me a run down of the condition before he sent them out.

One is basically going to turn into a parts box to improve the "better" one or someone can buy both for LESS than I paid just so I don't have to deal with it  . Or if someone is really ambitious they could try to get both 100% again :-P . I obviously paid tooooooo much for these but I'm over it, it is what it is.

Just humming from both cassette decks :dunce:
Only one good antenna :dunce:
Some trim on the bad one is actually in better condition than the "better" one
Still missing one big slider cap
No sound from left speaker on bad one :-O
Both have some case "issues" :nonono:

Overall, I could probably put one decent 80-85% box together if I put my mind to it but at this point I don't even want too  :dunce:  :nonono:

It's such a shame that they are in this condition but still
I really want an M71! But I think I'm lacking time, money and skills to restore these.

I might really have to sit down and take the time to make one nice one. I think that would be the only way I don't lose my a$$ on the deal but the final result would have to be with me selling the one I fix up unfortunatly....

The original plan (if these were in both in GREAT condition) was to keep one and sell the other for the price I paid. Definetly not going to happen  :dunce:  .

I might make a for sale ad on both of them for someone else to restore before I spend any time on them.

Congrats!

The M70/M71 is one of the easiest boxes I worked on.
You need to find the hidden chassis screws and then take the guts out (bu sure to remember the position of the tuner needle - had to take mine apart again to get it correctly  ).
A paintjob will work on either of those and after Chris' Van Halen M70, we all know how dope they can look as a crazy custom.
I would say go for both! Those sliders are probably easy to remold - I got the same problem ahead of me with a full set of C100 knobs  .
The humming is 99% sure just the record bar....spray it and move it a couple of times and I guarantee you will have no more humming.
The left speaker could be an easy fix too (function switch (which works with the funniest lever I ever saw) or maybe record bar too).

Have fun restoring them! I am still trying to get myhands on a M71 too and am also constantly looking for a beater M70 to restore as a custom job.

Actually i am just busy enough with my C-100BTTF and dang it is turning out GOOD so far :w00t:

Wow, I just bought an M70 that is WAY worse condition than either of those!!

This M70 I have is such a piece of crap I'm really thinking of just parting it out....anyone need parts?

If you decide to unload one, look me up - maybe I can piece something together with the parts....

They look better in pics than in person  .

If you think you are interested in one, I'm more than willing to move them outta here!

Blu I've made a few of those purchases over the years and can sympathize, I got rid of the boxes which easily let me move on. :-/

M71's for some reason or another always seem to be in poorer condition than most M70's you find....... :dunce: :annoyed: :hmmm:

True

Also, the people that associate themselves with these GOLD M71s tend to have to STAB other civilians that try to rob them of this boombox. True story, the previous owner STABBED a crook that was trying to rob him of one of these M71s :-O :grim:

I'm pretty sure I decided the fate of these boomboxes......

Build one good one and first try to sell the parts box mostly together on epay. If no bites on epay then continue the part out here on boomboxery and on epay if I have to.

The good box I will probably sell after I am done. If I get crazy with it I MIGHT try to respray the champane color on the body of the box  .

Yeah man - :-P

Great news though, I am actually refinishing one like you said I would  . I couldn't let them sit last night so I dug into the keeper and did some repairs and got it all apart. Going out today to pick out the new "gold" finish I will be spraying on the case....

BREAKDOWN!

Good luck Joe!
This is the only JVC RC model is missing now!
I could use 1 or 2 antennas.
Plus if your getting rid of the bad one maybe I could see it if it's
restorable?! :hmmm:

I could really use 1 antenna if your parting one otherwise might want
To see the bad one next month.
Have a great time restoring! :-)

I will try to keep the donor box as complete as possible for someone if they really wanted to restore it, but at this point it is turning into just a parts box.

There was only 1 good antenna from 2 boxes, so no antennas are going to be for sale.

I did pick up the new "gold" for the case and really have a good plan now  . Sanding and prep start tomorrow
