Uncle Ed you are a hoarder! Get rid of all that junk on the shelves and put your boomboxes there!

As other esteemed members have mentioned it's patience and persistance that pays off.
And as Ed said, the journey is as or more important than the destination.
I made a list, just like Ira suggested when I first started trawling s2go a few years ago.

You need to know WHAT you like. Find the models that really turn you on and start compiling a list of them

I've slowly been going through my list and marking them off, but for each one I take off, I always seem to add another.

Collecting these things really isn't about the grails. Everyones got grails. Don't get me wrong, I ADORE my C-100F, M90, 777, BigBen etc etc.
But it's the other radios. The ones you see a picture of an fall instantly in love with. The ones that take time and patience to get, lots of research: those are the real
boxes that will be the gems of your collection.

As you collect you'll find out what you like and become more focussed, this only happens with time and patience.

My advice is to take it easy, settle back and enjoy the radios you get as much as possible.

Good luck!

Rock On.

As a new collector, I think it's a bit unrealistic of you to just expect to find so-called grails. I understand you want to aim high, but most of us have been in this hobby for years and haven't found all the 'grails' we want. I have been collecting since 2006, and with my open-minded attitude I've managed to build up a collection of boomboxes to be proud of. Of the 70+ models I've owned since I started (I don't have that many now), I've only managed to find one or two boxes that are widely recognised as grails. I have at least one model from most of the major manufacturers, and can tell you that there are hundreds of great models out there for you to discover, each with their own unique designs and features. My advise to you is to keep an open mind, and focus on other boxes, not just ones on the grails list. That way, this hobby is a lot easier, and a lot more fun.
Great advice! When it comes to finding boomboxes, buy the ones you like and not just what other collectors call "grails." Don't follow the crowd like a sheep. The reason "grails" are so expensive and hard to find is that so many people are after a handful of models. And much too often they want them, not because they've fallen in love with them, but because they've read or been told that that those are the ones to have. Be your own man! Consider the value of every boombox that comes along, because you'll probably find some you never thought you'd love until you own them. I have hundreds of boomboxes, and, yes, they include some of what collectors consider "holy grails," but I didn't set out to find them. Eventually, they just came my way, along with many other unique, beautiful, classy boomers. So... keep your eyes open, be true to your own likes and dislikes, be patient and persistent, and cast a big net. What you catch may surprise you.

Oh... and, yes, one of the reasons this hobby is a journey and not a destination is because the search itself can be fun (despite at times being frustrating). The process really can be as enjoyable as the product. Of course, collecting is also a journey rather than a destination because the more boomboxes you find, the more you'll want. Most collectors never reach a "destination" where they can say, "I'm there. I've reached my goal. I have enough, and I'm done" Collecting is an addiciton, and every conquest makes you hungry for more!

Yep stear clear of this character, he buys boxes by the dozens and throws them in his apartment until there are just little pathways to the Refrigerator, TV, and Computer. Then to top it off he makes videos about his disorganized pile of whatever that is over there and this thing here as a sort of trophy, it's his boombox graveyard.

Um wait was that you Frank?

I would have to say any members residence or franks back yard.

Detroit and SW Florida have netted me some biggies in a time period of 3 days! (M90 and a C100F)
You gotta keep your eyes open and ear to the street. Put the word out that your looking and increase your odds.
Good Luck man.

Hell yeah, before I got the two I mentioned, I wouldn't have dreamed I would own either of them and I was cool with that. I couldn't see spending $500-1000 on any box, they sort of found their way to me. In this case lightning struck twice.
I collect boxes that I like, it just happens that sometimes you get lucky and find ones worth alot in the eyes of others. In fact the most I ever spent on a box is $200 and to be honest, I doubt I will ever go over that amount..
The dozen or so I have is a small collection compared to others, but I'm very happy with the ones I have. :-)

Yes, I love visiting my local 'hunting grounds' because I like the atmosphere of the place, and the fact you never know what you're going to see around each corner. And when you find something you really want, (a nice boomer in my case), it makes my day!

This is so very true!! At one point I was so keen to find awesome boxes that I used to buy practically every square '80s box I could find! That was when I really was addicted, or should I say obsessed?

By the way, I'd love to see a list of the 'hundreds' of boomboxes you have collected! How long have you been collecting?

as far as i'm concerned it's always been cheaper and faster to buy boxes from members also you have the option of trading boxes with other members which is awesome once you get to know them and earn their trust, plus there aren't many price wars buying from members unless they are looking for a best offer they mostly have set prices or negotiable prices ,i'm just glad sinister can put up with me cuz i ask a lot from him  .
