Where is the best place to find grails / ghettoblasters?

I noticed that grails show up very infrequently on ebay. Someone said that if you wait a year, they eventually all show up.

But, thats a pretty hard way to start collecting, especially if everyone is waiting for that 'one available' blaster to show up (think 2000$ M90 pricing). I'm looking for a panny rx7200, but so far, none have shown up, anywhere.

So, I need some other ideas of where to look!

so far I have:
thrifty stores (very little luck here)
ebay (can be high prices)
craigslist (or are we all watching this too)
japan yahoo auction (Im not quite ready for overseas buying)
weekend flea markets (not much luck here either)

So out with it, where is the 'holy grail' secret stash of inexpensive ghettoblasters? :-D :-) :-)

Is there an island somewhere where everyone walks around with 80s ghettoblasters? :-)

I've pretty much resigned myself to never finding a grail "in the wild" so to speak. But I've had good success with Yahoo.jp. I got my big sharp from there, and my National-Panasonic RX 5700.

Don't rule out yahoo.jp, it's really easy, both of my experiences have been positive. Get yourself an Auction Proxy, because Japanese sellers won't ship overseas. Be prepared to PAY for their services. PM me if you need to know the details of mine.

Sort of, they're called Canada and Germany. :hmmm:
:agree: Canada is quite well-known for being able to grown Conions and Clairtones on trees. You can just pull off the road and pick as many as you want. That's why old member gsbadbmr has almost 40 of them.

Collecting is a journey not a destination, the joy is in the trip and the friends on the trip with you.

Patience is definitely a virtue in this hobby...and many hours serching the net... :-D ...I have been collecting for just over a year and have found 20 grails in various places for various prices....craigslist, ebay, boomboxery, other collectors, thrift shops, garage sales, and flea markets are all good sources. For me the hunt is part of the fun and the frustration...but if it were easy what fun would that be? Trust me patience will pay off and eventually every grail you are looking for will eventually be up for sale...just make sure you have the cash when they pop up... :-D

Well if you can get lucky you can catch people sleeping on eBay and pick up the box you want at an affordable price. Keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist and make sure you check out for any local estate/moving sales as they may contain a few boxes. I've had a good experience buying a box through the forum here and so I'd recommend it as well especially if it is a more expensive model as some eBay folk can misrepresent their ads.

Thanks again for the advice, everyone.

Estate/moving sales is an interesting option, as there wont be much competition.

And I'll take a trip to the island of Canada someday. :-) Sorry, couldnt resist

As a new collector, I think it's a bit unrealistic of you to just expect to find so-called grails. I understand you want to aim high, but most of us have been in this hobby for years and haven't found all the 'grails' we want. I have been collecting since 2006, and with my open-minded attitude I've managed to build up a collection of boomboxes to be proud of. Of the 70+ models I've owned since I started (I don't have that many now), I've only managed to find one or two boxes that are widely recognised as grails. I have at least one model from most of the major manufacturers, and can tell you that there are hundreds of great models out there for you to discover, each with their own unique designs and features. My advise to you is to keep an open mind, and focus on other boxes, not just ones on the grails list. That way, this hobby is a lot easier, and a lot more fun.
