I'll say one thing for that kitchen clutter boom-box Youtube guy,
He sparked one interesting conversation among us about collecting.
I've enjoyed reading the different points of view regarding the question of , crossing the line when it comes to collecting.
Is there a line? I don't think there is really...unless it's motives other than the love of Boom-boxes.
The only thing I see Mr. Youtube kitchen clutter guy guilty of is storing his boxes face down in filth. I'm not a judge, but that's just wrong.
Hold your favorite Boom-box or Walkman up in the air and say I LOVE BOOM-BOX!!!!!!

Cheers OSS

I will say the bus driver has a history of being very selfish, rude and underhanded towards many members here and on S2G, If you havnen't been around long then you wouldn't know about them. I don't think it's really an issue of how many boomboxes he has, it's really about how and why he obtained many of them. The way he treats the boxes becomes an insult to us all if you know and understand the history of the bus driver.

You are very correct that having this as a topic has spawned many different takes on collecting and that in itself is constructive and entertaining.

Just when I thought I didn't "need" any more boxes, I hit the "buy it now" on ebay twice today. Damn it - I better go setup my cot in the garage :sadno: .

I just want to play with all of them!

I bought my Sharp GF6262 on eBay a few years ago for $25; and virtually every box I've gotten since has been from Craigslist, the flea markets and hamfests, and of course the Goodwills and other thrifts. Most of my boxes have been in the $10 range, the most expensive one I've ever bought was a Helix 4636 for $70 on Craigslist. I usually spend one of my days off each week combing all of the thrifts and such in the Boston area; my criteria is no eggs and no late 80's/early 90's cheap stuff either. That helps keep it under control. I used to grab boxes like that all the time, hated most of them...so now it goes like this: Practically anything from the late 70's to early 80's; anything newer and it better be a nice one at the right price or it's staying. Also, there are no 'grails' for me. A few I'd like to have for sure, but patience is my virtue; I'll get there someday. No eBay.....it's way too expensive and it's also too easy. It's sooo much more rewarding to find them in the wild in whatever shape, bring 'em home and give them some love. I see no reason to shell out a month's pay for an M90 or such when I can find something else almost as good for short money at a flea somewhere. Condition matters not; not afraid to open them up and fix whatever I can and give them a good cleaning. Usually, deoxit and belts and maybe a new antenna from Radio Shack is all that is needed to get them working again. They ALWAYS need a bath! I don't care about scuff, scratches, scrapes and such because hey, these things are 25 to 35 years old at this point and they were built as portable devices, purchased to be used at home and taken out and enjoyed. If I wanted museum pieces, I'd collect antique vases or something. Just my 2 cents :-D :-D :-D

Alright.

You guys are delivering a super guilt trip here, because I just went under in my checking account to buy that disco lite, but it was only $200!!!!

I don't know how I'm ever going to recover from this addiction, but I'm surely not in denial. I'm compensating by helping my honey get a promotion (DONE! Starting July 1, he is making 15% more.), trying to get a full-time job so I'm not looking online for boomers all day, and figuring out how to legally gain permission to record and sell some cover tunes to have a boomer budget (and a tax deduction.)

At least there are no boomers in the Pacific NW to find at fleas or garage sales. I NEVER find them there and rarely see them on Craigslist up here. I also am somewhat picky about what I would buy if I saw it and only own four. I am hiding one right now, though as I try to figure out how to handle the coming marital discussion we will have about it. My husband is SUPER RAD!!!! :superduper:

I love Ebay myself. I don't have the patience for anything else. Craiglist? Their search function sucks, the photos suck, there is no notification option, and many sellers don't bother listing the model number, forcing you to waste time emailing questions etc. Garage sales and thrift stores? Most of those boxes are usually non-grails. And definitely no exotic Euro boxes either.

Sure hunting for boomers locally is fun, but what an ordeal it can be and for usually wimpy non desirable boxes so you are just kind of "settling" for crap.

Get on ebay, set a limit for spending, and enjoy boxes from around the world! Life is short, don't let the hobby bankrupt you but embrass it.

Craigslist doesn't always suck; as I said I got my Helix 4636 on there, and last summer scored my Sears SR2100-2199 for $25....I have a system, I search for 'boombox' AND 'boom box' and sometimes 'radio', but 'radio' only works under certain categories....if you do a general search using that word you wind up with like a thousand car listings lol.......anyhow there was a Rising 20/20 on there a few weeks ago but I missed it. Oh well.

I guess I'll never give up on the idea of finding a GF9191 or 777 under a pile of clothes at the flea market lol......
and no matter what the quantities of grails on eBay; I just can't afford to spend the big $$$$ they command. Sure, one might argue that I could save my money and get a couple nice grails here and there, but the problem is, boomboxes or no boomboxes, I LOVE roaming the fleas, thrifts and used record shops....my favorite thing to 'go out and do' in my spare time. Plus there are the walkmans, vintage receivers, turntables, tape decks, speakers, and records....I never go home empty handed!

Space? I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it because my box collection still only numbers in the teens. :-) :-)

1.. Dry attics are good places to store excess. :-D
Just don't put M90's up there. Send them to me instead. :-)

2. Returning them to a thrift store is not always a good option. If they don't sell it after a certain amount of time, it may end up in the trash.

3. 50 is a bit too much
:agree:
but 49 is ok. :-)

4. inventory costs money. If you are willing to pay the cost, and your family is, then it shouldnt be an issue. Cost is many things, maintenance, time, lost space,

Boxes wear out with age: caps, belts. heads. Keeping 100 boxes in running condition is a long, neverending journey.

Um... I think Restocat can't be trusted.

Send your M90s to me, please.

i recently sold a couple boxes to make room for a few that im getting that i find more appealing but yea my collecting habits are a bit extreme, my girl has already made it very clear that she wants me to slow down on all the collections, all of them. whether or not i will depends on what kind of deals i find.

I'm in the same condition (wife angry and lack of space)

I'm saving money to buy radios more interesting, even stopped to pick up a Panasonic RX-DT707 from the thrift store for $ 75 (CD not working and no remote control).

I will use my little space for truly grails radios, even to take a long time

Best post so far  . Was talking whit big radio collector friend ,have more than thousand big and really small radios , all Revox reel to reels, the whole Vestax tape decks and so on and on. He made one extra room whit idea for storage. Its not bigger than 100 sq/m but have all in one room. When the space is with good project its amazing how much can take :w00t: . He have at list 7 levels build from concrete, a few levels of wooden shelves and plenty of hidden storage places for spares and so on. Its same thinking like using the space in small RV's (campers) . And it works  . Isn't it the true a lot of people have game room, guest room and so on. Just make em double purpose  . I have one 38 sq/m terrace and a fellow architect just made some calculation and told me he can make a storage for 140 sharp 777 :w00t: . and thats still with big windows left all around, bathtub in the middle and huge soffa :w00t: . Cant believe it still but he draw me all  . So no way of using control. Or did i lost it already :hmmm:
