"hey (your name), you want something to eat? just move those 9 boomboxes out of the way there should be some cereal over there"

And don´t forget to take the boxes out of the cooker....

So as not to overcrowd my house i only have about 8 on display at any time.
But because i love the many different variety's of boomboxes i have collected lots !
Most of them are not for display, they dont have that WOW feature about them to
most people, they are really for my own enjoyment or as 'show n tell' to the few people
that do show a genuine interest.
Apart from the ones on display and about 30 in the shed that are for spares or due
for repairs i have dedicated one room to store my boxes.
I also have my computer and my 84 Marantz home stereo in there and there is still
room for more shelving for the boomboxes im yet to collect :-D
A lot of them are mini's or midi's so its easy to store a lot of them but im slowly
getting a variety of larger boxes too, and when room starts to run out i will assess
it then.
If you have 30 or 230 ;-) as long as you have control over it i think its all good !

Fellow enthusiasts, I feel your pain. Heck, I only have 13 boxes and I'M even concerned about the issue of when I should stop.
I'm so addicted to the thrill of finding a box in the wild, and the Zen experience of cleaning it up when i get home, that I'm starting to waste more gas on traveling from thrift store to thrift store than the box is worth when I find it.
I like ALL of the aspects of BoomBoxery.
1. the thrill of the hunt
2.The clean up and restoration
3.That they are pleasing to the eye
4.The enjoyment of using them.
That last one I listed is the forgotten aspect sometimes, so I try to make sure I pick a different one now and then to take for a walk or use around the house or show to my friends, and I try to frequent the thrift only once a week now, and never Epay unless I just gotta.

Cheers OSS

I'll rescue what I find at a thrift shop Once I have it cleaned and working again.I can decide who it goes to.See it as a boombox rescue mission. If we don't rescue them they will wind up in a pile like DM4U's never to be enjoyed by anyone including himself.Do you guys think the final days of a boombox should be spent behind piles of boxes, guts spilled over for everyone to watch on youtube, crammed in what is reffered to as a kitchen because the refrigerator is there, how humiliating for us collectors to hear our object of passion reffered to as.Quote.Theres that thing over there.
We do a service when we rescue these classics from the likes of people like him.Talk about collecting out of control.I only keep 2, I 've given 2 away 1 to my brother a prestine JVC RCM50C, and recently gave away a near mint JVC RC656 to my cousin in Puerto Rico I left it in storage when I came to live in U.S.A. I couldn't bear knowing that Boombox was there wasting away.I called my cousin had her pick it up (being a shortwave radio comes in handy during hurricane season) so I gave it to her and she loves and enjoys it. My advise is collect what is appropiate to your situation.find proper homes for the excess (as your storage situation dictates) for all means be sensitive to others in the household as they need space too.Rescue what you can but have a plan for it once cleaned and serviced. Some seniors have a need for older units as they listen to station that aren't exactly mainstream.See Gluecifer's post and you'll understand what I mean.I'm sure others can benefit from the vintage gear we rescue but can't keep.In this case something that was gonna be given away..We can ask if a seniors home can use a radio with good reception etc....

I have around a dozen boomboxes right now... One is for sale and I'm likely going to get rid of at least two more.... and one is in the mail on its way to me from macdude (I'm getting that smallish-midsize autoreverse Panasonic from him in exchange for a camera lens ~ a total win-win situation for both of us).

Since day one when I decided to collect, I've always said that I'd stop at 10~12 boxes and keep this relatively small scale. This is because of space in the house and because of other interests sharing that space (music, DJing, vintage home gear). Since my box count hit double-digits, its become more about fine-tuning that dozen and making sure I end up with good examples of the ones I REALLY want to keep. These are boxes that really mean something to me or that I think are ultra-desireable becuase of their sound qualities, value or both.

Nothing against a big collection, but I just don't see the point of gathering a MASSIVE collection unless I were building a business around it (like RADIOHEIR) because at some point you overstep the bounds of good taste an enter the realm of ridiculous. I can only ever listen to so many at one time anyway...

Rite on Jaetee.I agree 100% I only collect the best of those that I owned back in the 80s.It's my way of keeping it small my priced M50 I gave to my brother as a gift and couldn't have gone to a better person. If I had more than 3 at a time in one place I would constantly hear from my wife.So in the sake of peace and harmony I keep it light & tight.I'm only missing an M50 and I will be 100% complete. The 2 M50s that I've managed to own 1 to my brother the other to Ira because of dire $$$ needs at the time.

Jaetee that's a valid and good point of view but just that, a point of view. The reasons for collecting vary as wildly as the collectors and none of them are right or wrong. Listening to the boxes isn't the only reason for collecting, they also represent art or a culture or any of many facets of life and what that might have meant to a given individual. To many collectors just seeing these boxes elicits more pleasure than listening so I think it's impossible to place one set of standards on collecting.

I think the saying "To each his own" really applies well here. :-D

I have over 250 boomboxes.
They dont run my life, they are a big part of it and i really enjoy
the hunt, but they dont run it.
Im not broke because of them and i always spend what i can afford.
Apart from about 8 on display at any time the rest are secure in one room
and definately not throughout my house.
I listen to them everyday i am home. When the mood takes i will pick one
to listen to, be it tape, line-in, radio, turntable, whatever im in the mood for !
I really like the huge variety that WAS available and all the different features
they came with plus so many of them are very visually pleasing. They just
dont make them like that anymore !
Im not finding them all the time at garage sales and markets, ( in fact im
always surprised at how hard they are to find, where are they all ?) but if i
was my story may be different because i would have run out of room a long time ago.
But just as an example, i went on my usual garage sale hunt on the weekend and found
a near mint, fully working Sony CFS-900S mini. In nearly 4 years of collecting
(short time for some ) i have never even seen one of these, not on ebay or
locally. And how much was it ?? $2, yep 2 bucks !!
I knew i could afford $2, i had the room for it, so now i have 251 boomboxes !
And i guess thats how it works for me.
So for me i guess thats why i havent stopped at just 8 or 9.

It is very hard to disagree with any of you fine gentlemen.I agree that we are all different and to each his own JaeTee and I are Kool with a small collection based on our preference others prefer a large collection and that's ok too.The point is wether we have a small collection or large collection ( preference) we enjoy the boomboxes we have.
What I'm sure of is none of us pile them on simply to keep others from acquiring them.As is the case with a certain un decent man horder, that thrives on making it impossible for most to acquire a well deserved and wanted Boomer simply to let it rot in his home??If you have a small collection or large collection enjoy them.As AZA said don't let them run your life. This can happen with just 1.

Yup, I agree with you... to each his own... Like I said, I have nothing against big collections.... That's just not for me.

And I guess I should have qualified more what I meant with my comment about "overstepping the bounds of ridiculous" as that comment could probably offend some folks...

When you have shelves with boomboxes loaded sidways in your freakin' kitchen, unopened boxes of boomers stacked in the laundry room, hallway and bathroom, and you can't even walk around in your house without accidentally kicking a boombox, then that is beyond ridiculous. And we all know people like that exist.

  Yes we do and I also fail to see the point of this but I also don't want to understand why someone would want to bury themselves in not only boomboxes but clutter in general. That's my personal take, I find clutter depressing whether it's a boombox or whatever especially when it surrounds you like our famous videographer.

No offense taken or intended Jaetee, I was just expressing that we shouldn't be so quick to judge from our own perspective because everybody sees things a little different.
