that could be "the sleeper par exellence",yep,
Thanks, Jens, for the photos of the aka's and for agreeing that this one's a real sleeper. I wish I could prove it somehow on this forum, but the sound from this box would absolutely blow you away.

And to make sure I'm not just hyperventilating about this unit, I just brought mine out (it's always ready-to-go) and played it for my wife. And she completely agrees with my "blow you away" assessment. Which means something, since she hardly ever agrees with me about anything. So there!

Since many of us are seemingly having revelations about how good Sanyos can sound, I have to share...

I bought my Sanyo M9990 several years ago from an S2G member and really didn't expect much for a cheap fixer-upper. Honestly, it blows me away with its sonic competence! It sounds really, really good. It has great stereo separation, more bass than you'd expect for a smallish mid-sizer, and excellent mids & highs. It doesn't try to be overly loud, instead it just delivers pleasing, exacting sound.

I'd like to hear it side by side with the slightly more powerful bigger-brother 9994 (shoulda done that at the meet).

Anyway, its sound quality vs. size ratio makes it my sleeper box of choice to mention here.

If you don't have one, get one... you won't regret it.

Here's mine put to use while visiting South Beach last March!

hey john --
lets disagree for a change !!

the 9990 is very well known --and the real good/minty ones
get plenty of attention on ebay --and usually sell for 200-300

so --we cant say its under-rated or a sleeper .
right ?? :-)

Fair enough... I got mine mid double-digits before they were "exposed" as being really good. Plus, I did qualify my comments with the fact that I wasn't expecting much when I bought it. So, while it may not really be a sleeper in to the collector community, to me it was a bit of a sleeper when I got it. Thus, I under-rated it from the get-go. Seems most people know better now. :-D

For me would be the dt680.
It wasn't so big and it was more expensive when compared with bigger minisystems.
As its features weren't highlighted people skiped it. A little GEM sleeping in the store shelves for a long time.
It was sold for near 400 dollars.
Just imagine that a big AIWA minisystem, with more power and beatiful ligths cost about 270
dollars. People took those AIWAS ... then went to the service twice a year to change or adjust the optical pickup ... you know.

The dt680 is probbly one of the most underated boxes out there, heck it probbly blows away most of the grails in sheer quality of sound for that matter the whole platinum range is verry underated, one thing about them they all sound exactly the same, same power etc just different features :-)

I have a DT-680 and agree, it under rated. Moreso because it was released in the decline era. But, the beautiful part is the fact that at this time Panasonic was still pushing quality sound along with JVC, if not brutal power output.

And my (soon to be gone) JVC RC-M60. Really a very nice boombox. Listening to 107.7 Saturday Morning Classic Hip Hop right now on it...

Have to agree. Just picked up a CT-980 and I'm stunned by the power and sound. Not pretty like the grails, but it delivers the goods big time! Ira always told me that bi-amped was the way to go. Now I agree!

i think we have a terminology thingy  :-) :-D

the panny bi-amp series are always highly praised by everyone who has ever
heard any one of them --
but - very often -- one of us make an amazing $$ low price score - for mint ones -
both in the wild -and even on ebay

so --can we say they are not under-rated----------instead,
how about severely under-priced ??? :-) ?
:agree: :choco:
