i know rick has that sweet huge world band boombox with the big ass tuner section and has 4 woofers , 2 on each side and it's a 1 piece box , can't remember the model though.
Oh yeah, Floyd, the Silver Space Master II!

It certainly does light up nicely.

I'd just like to go on the record, after many years of silence, to say I've never ever seen an LED backlight I've preferred to a traditional bulb. I really hate the look of LEDs as tuner back lights, it's like people restoring classic pinball tables and replacing the globes with LEDs. I just don't like the look at all. Just my own personal opinion of course, but I've been biting my tongue on the subject forever it seems, and thought this is the perfect time for me to get it all out in the open and begin the healing process.

Followed by the Hitachi TRK-8080W:

James can I ask what you did to the 9998 to brighten dial lamp?

Hi Bill,

I highly polished the outside and inside of the tuner window with 'Displex'. This stuff makes the plastic surface much smoother and translucent than factory - great stuff. I also cleaned a huge pile of dust and other crap from the bulb when I had her open last. The camera has made it look brighter than it really is too.

James... :-)

AHHH Phoooey!! LEDs rock. They last a lot longer, almost impervious to shock, & are way more efficient & luminous. What's not to like? The look? OK, make a warm white LED & diffuse it anyway you like. I'm pretty sure you can get warm white LEDs somewhere & mimic that look easily for a fraction of the wattage used by an incandescent bulb.

I bet Super could cook up a LED mod that looks like the old-skool tuner dial lights. It bet it would be easy to mod the present kit he has into a 'retro glow'(tm 2013)

Cheers,
Cpl

As you may be right about the performance of LEDs but they throw originality out the window. Most collectors of anything will always try and keep things original. If it can't be replaced with an original type part then a suitable replacement is used.

I know some things are changed as Rick pointed out on pinball machines and even cars. But me personally I like the look of an original. Just like my Trans Am, many people tell me to get some nice chrome aftermarket rims. And while they look good I just don't want to loose the stock look. ;-)

I Am Legend
imho --the best of all worlds are the cool blue leds that norm injects -
they are not overkill bright --they are extreme pleasing --in day or nite lite -
and for us ' purist ' collectors -
the installation is reversable

LED's look good if the tuner numerals are painted on a sheet of clear acrylic, because the light gets "pulled" across it very nicely. Such as the MX920, M9998, M9994, Pioneer CK3, RX7000, the European RX5250, etc..

But if the numerals are just painted on a sheet of metal (like most boxes), LED's don't work well, because you get a harsh spotlighting effect.

Let me point out that my RX-7000 looks very much natural (vintage look) with LED. I have only replaced the lamp and no other alteration done. It has even the same glow of an Incandescent lamp. You must see it in real. If I don't tell you that it is an LED, you would only think that the original dim lamp is replaced with a higher wattage bulb!

Otherwise, I would not have done the mod as I also believe in the same principle of keeping it stock.

In some cases, there's no choice but to use LEDs. One example is my much-loved Grundig Yacht Boy (Transistor 865 in the USA) whose original lamps are no longer available. A pair of amber LEDs have exactly the same appearance as white tungsten lamps and they work brilliantly with the set's semi opaque dial diffuser.

There's a motto on the Autoshite forum; "Your ride, your way" which I think applies as well to old electronic tat as it does to old cars. ;-)
