Where I was bought up, our local church youth group was the place to show off your new boomer. A proper "arms-race" developed across the 80s.
A mate of mine was bringing along that GF5454 & was rather annoyed when I turned up with my new Philips D8134 & it sounded better.
Then he got a bigger Sharp (GF5858) which was louder than my Philips & he was once again top dog. It even had a cool flashing LED thingy.

When I bought my Hitachi 3D7, he gave up :-)

Cheers fatdog :-)
Our boomers may not have been top of the line, as we were buying them with our own money, but the battles were no less fierce for it. Hell, we started with monos.

Standing the two boomers side-to-side & cranking 'em until the very point of distortion (usually with the radio - both on the same station) was how we decided. Switching between the 2 & deciding which one we liked the best - it was often a close run thing.
Not so with the 3D7... One look at that 6½" centre woofer & he gave up without a fight :-)
Happy memories...

Sanyo M-X920...jamming an old Blackstreet cassette tape. This boombox really has a nice cassette player. Clean, solid sound with plenty of volume. I had been ignoring the cassette player on all my boomboxes but am now starting to appreciate them more.
