Asked him about it today too. Offered a trade radio and money, but nothing. I guess i'll go down for one in better condition or just available,no matter if it's RX-5010/5020/5030.
Fight is not over yet ! I´ll ask about it some other next time, but not gonna bother him either about it as it´s not the kindest act. It sure needs some bath time. I´ll keep you informated !

Does it come with burger patty, bun and sauce to go with the lettuce ???
Haha, no, but maybe there´s some "filling" inside ? Actually it´s quite minty inside, when i popped open cassette door, inside was little bit dusty, but grey like it was in the old days. So it just looks bad in outside.

Why don't you offer to clean it for him - a simple act of kindness might change his mind ?
I´d love to, but he doesn´t seem to understand me at all, i don´t get about half of what he´s talking as he has problems with that, but i´m sure that some time we´ll find a mutual "wavelength" I´ll see what i can do about it, trying to do my best.

Things went like this- i did him some shopping, i fixed the TV and digital TV converter box and he gave me this along with some cassettes. Today i ripped it apart, i used rubber gloves to do that as it was so horrendous and disgusting. Then made some soapy hot water bath to all plastic parts and casing, got it all nice and clean.

Then put it all back together after some checking, cleaning internally, bam ! Everything works nice and clear, but noticed that radio reception wasn´t good at all. Just not at all. FM stereo doesn´t engage, stations heard poorly. Any ideas what might do the trick, what is wrong ? I guess the problem is that i washed the back cover with antenna base and forgot to dry it, that might make a bad connection. I guess all i have to do is clean the antenna connections too carefully. Some pictures tomorrow ! Stay tuned ! :w00t:

Needs very serious contact cleaning! Clean all contacts really good with a contact cleaner.... then he will start singing better! :-D
It got throat pain and congestion from all that smoking!

Point to note:

I hope you managed to dry inside the case screw housings/screw threads thoroughly before you screwed the metal screws back in? If not, I'd suggest taking it apart for drying with gentle heat from a hair drier or something. Once screws go rusty in wet posts you have another problem! Good luck!

Hello, of course, i shaked all out and let it dry for few hours, but as aerial mast was screwed in and wasn´t moving at all, then i decided to wash up the whole thing. Later aerial mast came off right away with ease. I guess i´ll check antenna connections again, i guess there´s something going on and wrong. I think the thing is that antenna has bad contacts. I should have got the antenna mast off somehow :bang: But no worries, it´s not fatal fault, it´ll make the reception better when i clean it all off.

You played it well grasshopper ! Patience and finesse ! Congrats.

Now hoping the cleanup goes well. Nicotine is insidious and if thick enough can cause overheating and connectivity issues. Combine that with dust and the odd bit of produce :'-( and you have a task for sure!

Looking forward to the end result

Haha, i sure did, just a bit of help and he was really kind this time

Cleanup was good, i cleaned antenna contacts, but still no luck. Tried several antennas, but none of them worked out, so what i did is that i took it to the repair shop, i suspect a bad amplifier on FM tuner, as cassette and AM work just fine and boom well. I didn´t short out anything, i cleaned it all up thoroughly, cleaned all switches, but FM tuners are for beginner like me very sophisticated. As this boomer deserves some better times, then i will pay for the master´s work, well, if only the master could fix it

And here are the photos, long time promised photos:

Remember guys how it used to look like ?

Well, i opened up, wearing rubber gloves as it was so mushy, sticky and disgusting. What i found inside were some food particles, insect carcasses and lots of dust, dust, dust and traces of nicotine and tar.

Cleanup going well:

Some more dust

And after bathing the casing and putting it all back together............

BAM !!!

All looking nice and clean and intact

Not even a single trace of lettuce here

Cassette works, AM tuner also works nice, but FM is very dull and weak. But as i told, i had the repair man work on that

I hope you like it ! As some may notice, chrome/silver stripes on cassette door and speakers are gone, well, this happened when bathing the unit, that´s a long term grease and nicotine exposure for you and there were no choice, these came off with a wipe. If i wouldn´t have bathed them nicely, it would still look yellowish and ugly. No worries, i´ll get some aluminium tape for cassette door, that´ll do i guess

I hope you like it !

OUTSTANDING job! :w00t:  :hooray:

It's difficult to see that this is the same box at all and I wouldn't have noticed the missing silver/chrome trims until you mentioned them. Dear me, you turned that box around. Has Harri (Mr Old Man From Downstairs) seen it yet, huh, has he?

Thanks everyone, it sure looks waaaay different than it used to be, i guess i´ll make cassette door trims out of aluminium tape as it´s almost the very same thing. Of course i´ll let you all know about it !

Best wishes,

Valter

Hello, repair master called me, they got it fixed. FM stereo doesn't work on it as decoder is faulty, but i don't mind as stereo won't improve sound too much.

Got it back there, sound has improved, they told me that few capacitors had gone bad over these years. No FM Stereo though and right now FM is how it is. Line In and cassette are still veeeeery loud.

I agree, great save!

Ya might not want to show it to him now, he may take it back. :w00t: Nah, I am sure he will be thrilled at the effort a young man put into it and bring a smile to his face!

Again, great job CG.

It sure is, it looks so different as it used to be before, i´ll show it to him, but i guess he won´t recognize it as his radio as it looks so different  Thanks for all those kind words, it sounds awesome, well, FM is still little bit shy but i love it and it´s better than it used to be. Way better  :w00t: I´m happy to see this boombox up and running nicely again, i wish those chrome trims didn´t come off, but i wasn´t just left no choice, this grease, tar and nicotine was immersed and soaked into the case and without hot soapy water i wouldn´t have eliminated that. But these don´t bother me anymore as they were already worn a little bit.
