Unknown Revisions/Improvements of boomboxes

So this Christmas, my wife got me an ION Retro Glow boombox from Sam's Club ($79.99). Impulse buy I suppose. When I opened the gift, there were several things that crossed my mind at that moment.

1: I can't believe my wife got me a Boombox! :w00t: - She's always telling me I can't have any more 8-)
2: I already have an ION Boombox Deluxe. Now, I have two of the same radio except that this one is translucent and has multi-colored LEDs
3: How am I going to feel about this Retro Glow Boombox? There are things I didn't like about my Deluxe model.

So, I opened the new box and pulled it out. Feature wise, aside from the LED lights, it was exactly like my ION Boombox Deluxe. At that point, aside from the cosmetic outward appearance, I figured the functionality and user experience would be exactly the same as my Deluxe model. And this is where things get interesting.

The ION Deluxe:
There were quirks with my ION Deluxe model that I never cared for. For one, when FF / Rewind end was reached, the belt inside would squeal like a pig. The cassette deck door didn't open smoothly. The tuner knob for the radio has a plastic on plastic scraping and very cheap feeling. The bass boost feature distorts the sound. At low volumes, the volume pot would play the left speaker only until turned up to a level that was louder than I wanted for being in my office while working. Finally, the VU needles and LEDs that represent output volume, barely move or flash unless you are wide open.

So, I'm thinking about all of this while I'm looking at this thing. My wife is looking at my facial expressions, and I am assuming she see's the mix of all of what I have previously described to you above, on my face. So she says: Do you like it? So I go to the positives on it. I like the new look and the LEDs. That's cool.

So, at this point I start playing around with it and I start noticing stuff. The cassette deck door opens way smoother than my Deluxe. I pop in a tape. press Rewind and let the tape reach the end. No squealing! Flip it over and do the same with FF. Quiet as a mouse with no screeching of a belt inside. So, being old school, I press play. Tape is playing fast. No surprise. Delt with that on my Deluxe. Sure enough, the tape speed adjustment hole is still behind the decal on the back. A trip to the bench and a few minutes later, speed is dialed in. Next, I flipped the bass boost. No distorted sound! Only a tiny extra bass, but what do you expect from these small speakers. It sounds better than my vintage Quasar GX-3612 so that's cool. Next, I try out the radio. It picks up 104.9 which some of my old school blasters cannot do very well. Impressive! Also, at that very moment, I noticed something was different with the tuner. It is still the digital chip style tuner with an analog appearance however, they used a thick dampening type of grease on the tuner dial that gives it a very smooth feel. No more plastic on plastic feel! Now, I'm starting to look at this thing more. Could they have addressed other things? I turn up the volume slowly from no sound to a low volume for my office. Right and Left speakers both start at the same volume level. Yay! There isn't a balance knob on these and my Deluxe annoyed the crud out of me with this flaw. How about the meters? Do I have to run it wide open to get any activity? Nope! I no longer have to absolutely distort the internal amp at wide open to get the meters to jump around! That was a biggie for me. I still find myself going 1/2 to 3/4 volume to fully enjoy them, but they actually jump and flash at a decent level. Its nice that they increased the sensitivity from the Deluxe model, even if it's only by a small amount.

I found that all of this made all of the difference on how I felt about the radio. Yes, it's still cheap, but now I will actually use it. I told my wife everything that I found that they improved on from the Deluxe and how I actually enjoy it more than I originally thought. My other ION Deluxe is back in it's stock box and I will likely sell it and use the Retro Glow version.

My whole reason for this post is because this isn't the first time I have noticed a manufacture improving on a product over time without mentioning it to the consumer. I thought this new ION was going to share the same issues as my previous model. In some ways it does, but in many ways, it's better. I would've never got another one just because it had LED lights, but knowing now that it is improved means a lot. The mini M90 was the same way. They ran a sale on the final release and so I decided to go for it. When I got it, I discovered they added AM and the Bluetooth hiss was gone. The volume was smooth.

I wonder how many times I may have missed out on a better revision because I was unaware of any improvements? I'm now glad my wife got this radio. It has opened my eyes to the fact that sometimes they improve things without telling you ;-) Maybe they listened to Techmoan when he gave a crummy review. Again, it's still a budget radio, but addressing these issues has made it an enjoyable boombox for me now. I've been playing heck out of it.

Also, this retro glow boombox can be seen on retro recipes channel on YouTube. I enjoy his channel as it is about 80's nostalgia, but I digress. I just thought he had modified his Deluxe model. I had no clue they were selling a disco model with lights.

Historically, there have been members here who have had their wife run their boomboxes over in the driveway with their car.
Another had his collection destroyed by his wife during an ugly divorce. Saying this last part for a friend.

If a wife of mine ever actually BOUGHT me a boombox, then believe you me, she would be told that A. it was the best gift I had ever been given in my entire life, B. it was now the best sounding and best looking boombox I owned, C. It was now my absolute favourite boombox, D. I would give it a prominent place in our home and play it constantly, and E. I would spend at LEAST $1000 on whatever pleased her the most, immediately.

Boomboxes are fragile creatures that must be protected from unforeseen circumstances. Like a marriage. Just saying. :stereo:

Youre wife bought YOU a boombox?

I can't imagine what it would feel like to have my collection destroyed by a nasty divorce. That would be the worst.

You are right! I have been playing the heck out of this thing. I know she appreciates it because she comes into the office with her coffee, and smiles at me listening to it :-) I dialed in the cassette speed perfectly and I have almost gone through all of my tapes. I have run the battery down at least 5 times since Christmas. I actually do enjoy it. It is specials because it is the only box in my collection that my wife got me. It's a keeper 8-)

Her Birthday is coming up at the end of this month. So I am planning something special for her ;-)

I had 120 boomboxes. All she saw was junk. This cassette on this one doesn’t work. The antenna on that one is broke. It’s ALL a bunch of junk. I showed her current E-Bay listings to show her that “junk” I had maybe $4000 invested in was conservatively worth $20,000 ten years ago. She wasn’t buying it. It was junk.

i still have pictures of that “junk.” That perfect M-90 that Ira emailed me about one afternoon and I snagged for $900 is worth over $3000 now IMHO. Add the Big Ben, the Studio 1, the two M-70s, the 9990s,9994, 9996, 9998, MR-X910, MR-X920, the Sanyo mics to go with them, and over a dozen other boxes and accessories we use the term ”Grail” to describe ended up smashed, thrown in the garbage, or just tossed out In a pile to get hauled away to Lord knows where.

I repaired my own, I learned from Norm, the best. The Sony APMs he hooked me up with (a fantastic trip to the Canadian border lol) and the M-70 strap one of our “Mods” (lol) manufactured met the same fate. A huge retirement investment I spent 10 years gleefully putt together from scratch vanished into thin air. There are a few members here I was able to pass units off to but not much.

Jewellery , bro. Just walk her into the store and tell her she can have anything she wants. If Mama‘s not happy, NOBODY is happy!

So she bought you a boombox. Never have I ever heard of that happening. Lucky Dog.

That story from @mellymelsr is classic!:surf:
I've talked to Melvin a few times on the forums. I might have to get him to tell me that one.

I repaired my own, I learned from Norm, the best.
Norm is a stand-up guy along with many others here. He rebuilt one of my M70 Alps tone boards. The next M70 I got needed the treble pot fixed, I decided to tackle it and was successful! I have also gotten a strap and a motor for my RX-5050 along with lots of valuable advice. I enjoy learning.

Most all of my radios, and pretty much everything in my house for that matter, have been apart and repaired by me at some point. I buy them broken and then repair them to 100%. It's a nice talent to have. I couldn't afford a restored radio then, and I certainly can afford one now. So, it's a blessing to have the collection I have. I figured I would have to be a millionaire to obtain some of my more famous/collectible radios.

The friends we make along the way, are icing on the cake. I'm not much of a people person as I mainly keep to myself, but one day I hope to be able to go to a boombox event.

Isn't that the truth!

Thanks Brother :-) I plan to give her the royal treatment. I have made a dinner reservation and have a full day planned for her in the future.

@Transistorized , here is the link to the thread by Melly about that story. I didn't realize it was 15 years ago.

I was the same way, after hearing about her reaction to how he started looking at his M-70s (that JVC blue one was just as good as the white) I was positive she hit it on purpose. All his spare time was wrapped up in those M-70s he couldn’t afford when he was a kid. We all could relate to that.
I remember Holly. I was friends with her on Facebook after she got her M-90, finished her divorce, and returned to college. There were a couple of female members back in the day. I used to have Freddy on Facebook as well.

Funny how first Alvin and then Bobby jumped right in there wondering if she did it on purpose…

Norm’s comment on Glue being uncomfortably good at giving eulogies is classic. I forgot just how flat out hilarious the running convo here was 15 years ago when I first joined. Blah Blah and that legenderriere gif Profile pic sure brought everything into focus

I forgot that it was the Legendary White M-70 :'-(:dunce::nonono::blink:

I had seen this topic, but today I reviewed it in details.
For the first version Techmoan was quite critical:

By the way, this version is also available on the Leotec website:

I see that you are happy with the new model and they have made improvements.
Here is also a positive review of the new version:

For the first version Techmoan was quite critical:
I felt the exact same way. He also reviewed the GPO Brooklyn and it isn't much, if any better, aside having a CD player. The battery dies within 2 hours. It's large and heavy but doesn't have the sound or volume to back it up. The meters just jump around without any consideration to the music. The CD player can scratch your discs if you move it around with playing a CD (manual says to not move it while playing) and worst part is, the battery dies after just 1 day of sitting even without using it!!!!

Then he reviewed a cheap boombox from Aldi that had a mono head and had so much drag and W/F issues you couldn't even listen to it, and he complained less about that. I left a comment on the ION video because, while it certainly isn't a top notch machine, I also felt he was way more harsh than crappier radios that he reviewed more favorably.

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy his reviews but the ION had more of a negative vibe than what I feel it warranted. The only other really negative review was when he was reviewing the Sony Sports Walkman. He doesn't like to be critiqued on his reviews. Apparently, someone must've commented about how he shouldn't be throwing a vintage Sports Walkman into the water, so he did it twice..lol. Hey, it's his purchase, he can do whatever he wants with it as far as I am concerned and I thought that was funny.

Anyway, I agree with you. The ION actually sounds better than the GPO Brooklyn. I own both, and the ION has more bass and is smaller. It also will run for 8 to 10 hours listening to the radio as long as you do not have the LED's on. They draw a lot of power for some reason. Most importantly, it doesn't die overnight while sitting in standby mode.

One of the biggest things I do not like about the ION, is the auto-stop they chose to implement. I never liked the (finger) style auto-stop because if you have a tape that is sticking on the take-up wheel side, it will go unnoticed by the auto-stop and the tape will get wrapped around the pinch roller until it physically stops the motor and flywheel. I did have two of my tapes get chewed by this machine because of this. Fortunately, they were ones I recorded and weren't factory store purchases, so not a huge deal. It's not just the ION that would suffer from this type of issue, but any vintage deck that uses that same style of auto-stop would suffer from this. And, to be fair, it does result from a cassette that has dragging wheels so it's not the entire fault of the machine. But a better model would stop the tape when it notices the take up spindle has stopped to prevent a worn cassette from being chewed. That's the one thing that the GPO does have going for it. It does use the take-up spindle as an auto-stop so it is less likely to chew cassettes.

Just my two cents.

I'm glad they have improved it, and the price is still very good when it's on sale. But I'm not really a fan of the "retro glow" version, why would they make a retro-looking boombox but then give it a transparent body with glow lights? that doesn't make sense.

They typically sell for $99.99. My wife originally paid $99.99 at our Sam's club, but later they ran a sale for $79.99 for which I caught and was able to save my wife the 20 dollars on our card. That made the radio more acceptable. Just recently, I noticed they dropped it to $69.99. Now that makes it much easier to forgive it's shortcomings. We weren't able to take advantage of that price because our date of purchase on our receipt was past the 30 day return policy at that time. I personally wouldn't pay 100 USD for this thing, but 69 to 79. Yeah. I think that's reasonable.

I rarely use the lights. It looks like a dark gray to me when not lit. The standard deluxe model was a traditional silver, but to save money, they refused to chrome plate the tuning knob on the side and left it black. To me, that made the radio look cheaper and unfinished. They continued to leave the tuning knob black on the retro glow version but they decided to darken the back half of the radio so at least the knob blends in versus sticking out in a bad way.

I can also confirm that this boombox does NOT work correctly with rechargeable NiMH D batteries when the LEDs are running. I guess it is voltage dependent. The volume goes to a whisper at wide open volume when the LEDs are switched on. This issue only exists when using rechargeable 1.2V D batteries. Alkaline 1.5V batteries do not have this issue until they start running flat. But most are likely to not power this radio on D's. The internal Lithium battery runs it for a sufficient amount of time albeit shorter with LEDs on.

The idea of putting LEDs on it was likely a marketing tactic in an attempt to sell more to a wider audience. Just my opinion.

Vela Discolite had LED lighting, and cheap cassette mechanisms and got popular from Madonna.
I don't like it, but everyone thinks it's cool.

Well, I think the exact opposite about ION.
Old collectors don't like it, but I like the translucent body and LED lighting. That makes it different and unique.
I think you bought it at a very good price. I wish you to listen to it and enjoy it for a long time.
