We'll just have to agree to disagree. :-D My GX was heard against the M-90 in Florida. Let's just say we raise the funds for you a plane ticket, bring your suntan lotion, bring your M-90, even set it up to run on 220v...and go from there.

The CP-7 is my grail yes, but as with anything I am fair and balanced. And being just that, yes the Sharp pounces all over my CP-7. It is what it is. But my CP-7 is a grail to me for many reasons besides sound alone. :-D

Are your speakers og in your 300? im balanced with in reason too  I love all the reasons for buying a boombox but most importantly comes sound IF the m90 wasn't that good i sure would'nt want another i mean lets face it it's not the best looking box in the world, so what else would it have going for it apart from iconic reasons mmmm sound thats it i belive :-D

The question is not te sound but how it's stature has been built up over time as the "Grail". It is a quentissential 80's box. What puts it and the Conion C100-F, JC2000/Helix Wheely into the stratosphere is it's association with 80's hip hop culture. That is why they are so pricey. People don't pay for the sound. Look at a most listings, the first things you'll usually see is words like grail, hip hop, rap, breakdance etc. Sound follows along somewhere after the grail/history part.

The 'Funken Studio 1/1M eats the M90 for lunch IMHO and I and thirty others winessed it first hand. No one calls the 'Funken a grail either. Heck, in Europe they seem to show up everywhere. The M-90 is a great box, take nothing away from it. And besides, ultimately, if you think it's the best of them all, that's great. I think the Dalas Cowboys are the greatest. But they do get their asses handed to them as well.

I have what some would call extremely heavy hitters in my collection power wise. But despite their power, they still have their limits. Heck I hve a Magnavox Phase III that was in Beat Street providing the sounds for the subway rumble scene. In LL Cool J's Radio video they are using a Sanyo C-4/5 component box. The Beastie Boys have a Fisher PH-480 on one of their album covers. But even they along with other component boxes aren't seen like the M-90/Conion etc. as icons. Maybe they didn't look outrageous enough. Who knows? Who cares? Either way I admire them all and I'm cool with that. ;-) :-D

Thanks for your reply oldy :-) well i must be tone deaf then cuz i think the m90 has one of the best sounds around even the guy who has just recently serviced it said it sounded better than the likes of the jvc pc55, and if you mod an m90 the telefunken is left behind imho anyway i bow out of this convo gracefully ill let the rest of you make your own minds up :-)

The woofs are different. I still have the originals. The others are the exact same size, the exact same resisitance rating, and matching spl efficiciency. I could pop the originals back in there and it woudn't change a thing. The difference is in the build quality of the cone itself and it had a double magnet. That's it. When I change a speaker on my heavy units it absolutely must do two things:

1. Neither increase, nor decrease the load against the amp. Must equal the efficiency of the original while maintaining original resistive load. This goes for the entire assembly. It was really important in the case of my GX-300 since it has a true crossover and not a simple cap in line to the tweeter.

2. Must maintain the look, or be made to maintain the look of the originals.

I do this because it needs to maintain the sound that makes it great. And more importantly, I am not seeking to find a way to make it louder. So no need for a higher efficiency or lower resistive load. Volume is the same before and after. :-)

I would like to add to that question, is a C100 not an equal to the M90 or 1M? Or is it just different?

I just read this thread and glanced at my M90 and have a big ol' grin on my face.

That said, the only other box I really, really, really want in this lifetime is a nice, minty Telefunken Hifi Studio 1 or 1M

Plugged into the wall, the Telefunken rules.

Out at the basketball court with an unlimited supply of batteries, the M90 rules.

Out at the baskeball court with only one set of D-cells, the M70 wins.

There are two things about the M90 that bother me:
1) That power button! (It's too easy to forget you left it on, even worse on the batteries!!)
2) No dial light for the tuner!!!!
