I have never heard these models play before. For those who have, can you contrast the sound and build quality between them? You can also go off track a bit, like 9494 vs M90, I just wanted to get a general idea.

Thanks! :-)

Don't know about the other Sharps but an M70 blows a Sharp 9494 away in every respect.

Not that the 9494 sounds bad or anything; it's just that the M70 is a very, very good sounding box.

Agree... and I'll add that I prefer the sound of my M70 over my GF-9696 as well. The 9696 is loud, but lacking in well rounded or balanced bass. It's more of a heavy metal / rock box that is heavy on mids and highs, but won't hit a note below 80hz worth a damn. M70 has much better bass. Frankly, I think the GF-9191 / 9292 is a better balanced box (sound wise) than the GF-9696.

Still, if you're trying to choose a "one box fits all unit" between a GF-9x9x and an M70, just get the M70. It has, IMHO, one of the best tape decks ever built into a boombox for quality recordings as well.

With all that said, I think the Sharps look better.

The M70 crushes all medium sized boxes the same way its big brother the M90 crushes all big boxes. It is a great sounding box and sounds good when played at low volume or high volume. It is my favorite carry around box and always goes with me to the basketball court... :-D

My M70 sounded WAY better than my GF-9696 (which I sold a while back). I would get M70 before any mid-size Sharp. And I love Sharps :-)

Thanks for the tip.

I wonder though, was the sound difference always like this? In other words, what if certain boomboxes just 'age' better than others. The M70 could sound the best now because its components were built to last 30+ years.
Just a thought. :hmmm:

Was your GF-9696 fully restored? New capacitors, etc? In other words, was it a fair fight? :ls-duel:

Well, in my experience - GF-9696 was a great bedroom boombox - it was too weak for a bigger room. M70, on the other hand, is good for any room in my house. M70 is more like RX7200 than GF-9696 - sound quality is almost as good - although not quite as good, if that makes sense :-)

:agree: yes the m70 will have a better sound than the sharp gf96/94 series they really left out a lot to disire especially when the sound of the gf777 is a big bass box you would think they would do the 9696/9494 the same way not so nice looking box but it lacks the real sound to make it really wanted by everyone... :-/

Actually, THAT is a great point. Many boomboxes do employ components that wear faster than others and the M70 is one boombox that doesn't seem to suffer component wear-out nearly as much or frequently as other's that I've seen. I recommend a recap on EVERY Sanyo M-X920.

Wise words. :hmmm:

Guess I'm going to re-think that plan of saving up for a 9696...don't get me wrong, I love Sharps, but if it's one thing I've learned on this forum, it's that the majority is ignored at your own risk.

JVC RC M70 it is!

Uh, anybody got one for sale? :dunce:

Only problem Ken, is that if we all relied on that line of reasoning, there'd be no reason to buy or covet any other boombox besides what's on the top of the list.

 I know, it does sound funny, don't it?

I'm under a self-imposed effort to keep to a list. Due to a lack of space (and high prices,) I'm kinda limited in my collecting. I would like to be able to afford at least one grail a year. Unfortunately, that has meant giving up even trips to Goodwill. I'm going to need the room, and even the small amounts I have previously spent at the Thrifts are now going into the Grail Fund.

The fund is going nicely (abet slowly,) but I have to use the list to keep focus. My wife is an Accountant, and I need to be able to show on paper a plan to pay for my still-new hobby. She's kind of like the House Of Representatives in that she has the power of the purse at our place. :nonono:

Only we have a balanced budget amendment and she has the line item veto. 401k and long-term care insurance comes first in today's America, and rightly so. Gotta pay yourself first.

I'm gonna get there. Just have to focus on the list... :angelic:

:agree: with the M70 love, it's a great medium sized box that others are measured against for good reason.

As far as 9696's they look great and perform well but when they come up in very nice condition (rarely) they seem to sell for about the same as M70's on ebay so if your looking to buy just one I'd recommend going for the M70.

I love the M70 so much I have multiples! :smooch:

Younger (boombox non-aware) friends simply cannot believe how an M70 sounds...

That said... I LOVE the looks of the GF-9696. :w00t: But, you can tell the main speaker is of a lesser quality than the M70's.

I STILL haven't heard the bigger bro M90. :-/
