I've heard opinons that the GF-777z is not all that hot. True or not? Please let me know your preferences in music & the overall musicality of the GF-777z. Also, if you could pick just 1 box, which 1 sounds the best to you & why?

Thanx,
Cpl-Chronic

For me - he 777 is loud, but there are quiet a few louder - M90-M70 that will kick out a great loud sound
the panny 680 has a great bass and a creamy sound

the looks of the 777 are cool - the sound is good but some are better - the bass is alright and the over all is a 9/10

get a good one if you can - you won't be disappointed

each box is different for each part it brings it's to the party - you just have to work out what you want in it

the M90 is near if not the top - only price spoils every one having on
777's can be picked up cheap once in a while - but ebay has pushed it's price up to silly values

careful where you buy from

cheeres B ;-)

My 777 has been modded with modern Blaupunkt car speakers on the outside, better tweeters and has been deadened inside with sound absorbing material.

Mine sounds totally kick arse!!

But the stock one is apparently not this way, mine had blown side speakers when I got it though, so I never had the pleasure/displeasure of listening to a stock one.

Rock On.

The 777 has good sound. There are better as said above.
I would say it has deep base, is clear and is often bashed but is undeniably a very good sounding box.

If you can replace the speakers with some Lasonic speakers (black or white) the radio will blow you away!! It's what I did with my Graffiti'd version 777 and it's a whole new animal. Had a new one (in the box!) and it sounded very good. Get yourself a beater as I did and have fun with it.

Although I myself have never heard one, the opinion seems to be that the M90 is the best sounding 1-piece

But of course, there are 3-piece units even better

So it depends what you want to do with it.

Outdoors?
Indoors?
Conversation piece?
Looks cool?

For the same price as a 777, you could get a National/Panasonic RX-A2, which is louder, rarer, and portable too, since it folds up and can be carried.

Or, for half the price of a 777, you could get a Crown 850, which is a lot lighter (only 15 lbs), and yet still puts out the bass. I really wouldn't want to carry a 777 around, at 26 lbs.

IMHO any boomer sound different with any kind of music. Im after electronic stuff with deep low bass and did not liked 777 and 767 for this type of music. But indeed 777 is one hell of a good sounding box. with rock and such sounds . Of course there will be always better sounding boomers any subjective opinions depending of the type and the quality of the music and some personal preferences of the listener.

I like my GF-777 very much! I honestly don't understand why people are hating on the Sharp. It's good-looking, loud, good bass, clean overall sound, nice double cassette deck and many features. I agree with Bendycat: 9/10.

Also wouldn't say the M90 is the best sounding one. It's just really loud with decent sound quality. But I agree with Reli, that it really depends on what you want to do with it. For indoors get one with deep bass and good sound quality (for example Telefunken Hifi Studio, Pioneer SK909). If you want something to carry around a lot get a loud but not too heavy boombox (for example JVC M70). If you want to rock the block get a big one like the JVC M90, Conion C100, Lasonic TRC975 or Sharp GF-777.

I had a NIB GF777Z back in 1980s. That is almost 30 years ago :-) so my memory might be fuzzy. I have not heard it since then. My recollection is that it had very "tight" bass and crisp mid and high frequencies. It worked great for jazz and pop music. I have limited experience with vintage electronics but I suspect that what we get from these boxes now might be a little (or way) off there best game.

As I understand, 777 has separate amplifiers (amplification channels) for low frequencies which is rare for boomboxes. I wonder which other models had this feature?

these are by far one of the best boxes to swap the speakers and it makes a huge improvement in the sound .

I am one of the haters of the 777. Yea shoot me....but they are overrated and ugly....and thats MY opinion. Doesn't mean its right or wrong, just understand the worlds an imperfect place.

Haha! The major appeal of that box all boils down to the perception that it looks very loud (it is) and has a lot of deep bass because of the four 6" woofers (it doesn't).

As I said before, the 777 is a great box for classic Rock and Pop music. For R&B, Hip-Hop or any kind of music with 808 bass, it's a total and absolute failure!

As Jboogie and Floyd basically implied, a complete speaker overhaul/upgrade is the main thing that can make a 777 sound great with all music.

Allot of people hammer on this radio....I think it's a power house...BUT as Mono mentioned...808 notes

BUT...name some 80's radio's that do 808's great and then go buy them!

If you want pure LOUDNESS the 777 will deliver.....You want LOUDNESS outdoors....The 777 will deliver...

You want 1980's equipment that bumps 808's all night long....

AT-15 Cerwin Vega's!

They might be overrated but they are not ugly. The latter is obviously subjective. In my opinion, they look classy. No flashy decorations (ala Lasonics or even Conions). I also think people tend to value different aspects depending on when (late 70s, early 80s, mid 80s) they got exposed to boomboxes.

Americans like big & huge, in everything they buy........ That's really the 777's appeal.........I really don't think people are buying it because it's loud, or good-sounding...

I can tell you that 777 is also unquestionably boombox #1 for Russians :-P (I am one of them BTW). And, in Russia, the prevailing opinion is that it is one of the best sounding one piece boomboxes. BTW, Russians absolutely do not get Conions. On one Russian web site I saw a page that translates and comments on the well known futuristic boombox renditions on pocketcalculatorshow.com. This page has the following comment on the rendition of Conion C100 (my translation): "And of course, Conion C100 - African people favorite - will be absolutely reincarnated in a new image." Such dismissive attitude might be caused by the fact that Conions were never sold in Russia, people know very little about them and the attitudes were shaped up based solely on the looks. I do not appreciate their use of "African people" in that context (unfortunately racists exist everywhere or, perhaps, they just in-artfully tried to refer to the fact that African people tend to favor bright colors).

But how many 777's were actually sold in Russia in the 80's? Would have been black market, if anything.

I think the only reason Russians like them is because Russians lusted over anything Americans had :-P

I agree with Bill & JBoogie. I miss my minty (and rare) 919. If it wasn't so minty, I would've replaced the stock (stiffer) woofers for some foam edged & very flexible Lasonic style woofers for when I wanna kick those 808 tunes. I remember noticing how the amps had WAY MORE power than the woofers could keep up with.
