F the USPS, F UPS and F Fed Ex.
None of these companies care about how they ship items because they have insurance and you are just another claim.
Sorry for your loss. Glad they don't ship people!
The USPS is a self insured agency. We use no outside insurance carriers. All losses are paid against monies made by our insurance sales. What should be considered is that the USPS (as well as FedEx and UPS) use mechanized equipment to ship most of our Priority and Parcel Post packages. While on this equipment they will be dumped onto a conveyor belt and travel up and down a series of mechanized equipment and chutes. Some jostling of a parcel is common. In a recent comparison test conducted by a Boston TV news station they found the average USPS parcel suffered 4 "bumps". FedEx parcels averaged 8 and UPS was 10 I believe.
The best defense is a good offense:
1) utilizing good packing techniques. (a parcel should be packed to sustain a drop from counter level -4 feet.
2) If you would like to minimize the chance of your parcel being processed on automated equipment, ship it Express Mail. Express Mail will typically be transferred hand to hand or in a sack. A bit more money but far superior as far as handling is concerned.
