Oh the red was the primer .

I understand why you did blue, but I'm not diggin it man. You should do the grill black and then put blue on the plastic case behind the grill. Mucho cooler I think ;)
I had thought about doing it that way, but this way, if I ever want to go back to original it's as easy as pulling the grill and shooting it black!

Hey, atleast I didn't bulldoze a bunch of holes in it and put a piss load of LED's!

Reli, you have been reading my mind all the way through this project!

There actually are! I was thinking of pulling the plexi and taking it over there and seeing what they got....maybe buy a 4'x8' sheet and do all my radios :w00t: :-D
There's a company up here that will replicate whatever you bring 'em. Down to the shape and the beveled edges, if any. They also offer different colors, like translucent green, blue, etc, kinda like the stuff GE used on their boxes.

GOTTA make those speakers black dude, it would make them look bigger. It would also make the chrome center caps "pop" more.

I would also leave the light gray background the way it is, because it helps contrast against the darkness of the speakers. The speakers are the beauty of the 650, the way the woofers are closer together than most boxes, it's a different look that you want to preserve as much as possible IMO.

Do you happen to have the name of the plexi company.

I do see what your saying about making the speakers black and them looking bigger, but I'm nervous about F'n them up. I'm going to do some blasting....if the shred, then I will replace them with black ones, if they hold up I may try Bill's marker trick

I agree with the black grille idea, it would match the black graphics up above.. be the cat's meow! :cat:
I use the magnum sharpie trick all the time to my speakers too, I will never paint a set of speakers again, f_*ks up the sound! :nonono:

I'm going to live with it like this and then may go back to black on the grill, wifey doesn't like it either!

I think you should keep the deep blue grills personally, but you need black woofers to tie the look together with the right contrast.

Hmmm....I wonder who you are talking about??? :-D
Trust me bro, down the line, you will see me build an LED Box. It's been on my mind for a long time, just working on the details in my mind!

Taking the edge off that blue you used for the grille worked a treat. Looks professional!

Thanks man.....I actually really like it, but it's not everyones taste. Of all my radio clean ups and paint jobs I was surprised my wife liked this one least. But again....I like it.

Nothing left to do....BUT ROCK THAT BOX!

Here is a good example of how big this radio is. It's slightly longer and slightly taller than the M70

Some Red White and Blue for next weeks 4th of July!

SWeeet!!! I want to see that for sure! I've seen a few of your restos & yes, you do good work man.

I know most are skeptical but I'm not too worried about putting lights in the body of a grail, 'cause a bit of epoxy, sanding & fresh paint would do the trick in no time. It would be probably an hour of real work spread out over a couple of days. BAM!!! It's like it never happened, pilgrim!

Cheers,
Cpl

I was just about to write "It's a beautiful box, so if it ain't broke, why fix it?" But then.......

Chris I wonder if you painted speakers white if that would really bring out the grill nicely :hmmm:
Now that sounds like a plan.

That's true, I was just looking at this radio again and if I wanted too, I can restrip the grill in the media blaster and repaint it black. But first I may hit up that place Reli was talking about and see if I can get a blue tinted plexi for the tuner dial! That might pull this all together!

I think it looks beautiful Chris! You sure were lucky to find one with a dent free grill!

Congrats and well done.

James
I was totally blown away that there were no dents in this BIG grill. It's a real tough metal grill, but it's the whole front of the radio. I guess I got luck on that.

When I met up with the girl to get this radio, she popped the trunk of her car and the radio was haphazardly tossed in the trunk with a bunch of other crap  :annoyed:

Make them more Lasonic White? :hmmm:

I had this radio under the TV last night, staring at it, trying to figure out what it needs. It's really hard to know without just doing it and seeing what comes from it. I don't want to put paint on the speakers, how would I make them white?

I don't think a light dusting of paint would make a difference in the sound. It doesn't need to be a full coat like you would with a car. Several people here have done it, and haven't said anything bad about it. Just mask off the surrounds to keep them flexible. And put a bottle cap over the dustcap.

Or you could try using bleach, if white is the way you want to go.
