Nothing to be afraid of in here, dig in and do some scrubbing!JustCruisin said:I'm glad u made this thread! I have yet to tear into mine..

I see what your saying. I do have a black chassis I could melt and test repairing!MyOhMy said:I wouldn't use an iron on the buckled top, at least not yet. A flat iron will warm most that with which it has direct contact with, no contact = less or no heat. I'd be tempted to use a hot air gun (at least to start with) 'cos the air will warm the whole area more evenly. Have you thought about a thin sheet of metal on either side clamped with a bit of wood to evenly spread the pressure of clamps: Heat up, clamp gently, pause then repeat.
There's always the chance that the casing has stretched too much to .....'shrink back' so maybe a cut the depth of the damage will need to be made (like an expansion joint) then filled with filler prior to a (partial?) respray? Just trying to think a little differently here!
Thanks T-Ster, glad you enjoy these write up's. I always have too. I love the detailed tech break downs and the mod's. But that's just meT-STER said:Wow what a thread, some quality work there.
If you ever feel like the typings not worth it just think of us, walking in the door, seeing a new thread by you, walking straight to the kitchen to make a cup of tea ready to sit down and pour through it for 20 minutes soaking up all the pics, really inspiring post man.
Yeah, I might try that!blu_fuz said:^ good tip. I like the idea of a flat piece of metal on top and bottom to spread out the heat and clamping force.
Sorry, those are TWO different woofers, both from this box. I used a dry rag to wipe down the paper cone and then blew it off with compressed air. On the chrome cap, I used a Q-Tip, dipped in water and gently wiped around the base, spiraling up to the top, then used a new one to wipe the whole capduckman said:Great job man !
Regarding the woofers Chris, what all did you use to clean them ?
Dave, just so everyone knows, you went to Philly to make the "Mega Deal" with the BB40 and I asked you "See if he has a Wheely". For me, it was a super long shot thinking "Maybe, just maybe, David will return with so many radio that he might want to part with the Wheely". And to my complete shock, you thought of me and you made the deal. Of course, I was hoping it would be in a little better shape , But the truth is, if it was, either you would have kept it, or it would have been out of my price range.Dr DER said:Looks great..

Chris I'm so impressed with the outcome of this whole project. I still remember the REXCEL and the DYNASTY from the BBQ and the DYNASTY was a true heap of shiat! I cant believe how good it looks now. I cant wait to see and hear this thing, and hopefully, at the HOLLYWOOD meet!
I myself like the ol "glue a cassette over the melted plastic" idea Lol. Until you can repair it properly, IF you want
GREAT play by play, by a great dude!! Looks BADASS! Much respect man, MUCH respect!
Thanks Peter, I thought of that as wellfresh produce said:Great work Chris! It looks great if anything just throw a cool sticker over the melted plastic
I do have some stickers from back in the day!jimmyjimmy19702010 said:With the two halves affected by the melt mark, here's what I'd do:
1. Heat gun the plastic roughly back to shape.
2. Use body filler to smooth up the surfaces.
3. Place a big, period correct sticker over the repair to cover the repair surface.
Thank you, I was thinking of doing a full "How to fix broken post" thread and just use an old case, break off all the post and see what creative idea's I can come up with, then see what others have learned!mancardo said:You've done a Great job man...I wish I had your skills....I really like the "broken post" idea
Thank you Bill, it means a lot coming from the members that ACTUALLY saw this thing. I am really scraping the bottom these days I have seen so many threads over the years where members have brought back curb finds, parts boxes, basket cases and dumpster blasters. I just think to myself, "If they can do it, I can do it". I sometimes wonder if members think "Man, Chris' collection must be all trash!" Sometimes I wonder . But I am working within my envelopebaddboybill said:Totally freaking awesome Chris. I can't believe you took that pile of junk!! Yes junk and turned it into a wheely again. I to remember when Joe brought that to the meet and was simply blown away by the damages. I figured it for just a parts box but yet you saved it. You are a Dr. hero in my book bro and the wheely will go down in history as having a full transplant!!!
Bad Boy Bill
Thanks Trippy, I was hustling on this repair. Every night for hours, 12 hours a day on weekends. Howie, SLO & Dr Dre will attest as I had been texting them with the results through the whole thing. While they were off enjoying their weekends, BBQ'n, drinking beer, spending quality time with the family, I was sweating it out in 90+ degree weather in the garage plowing through the "To Do" list!trippy1313 said:Wow Chris. I'm pretty much speechless. You've done again. And fast too.
Great work man, really. This is a box I too would love to have some day.
I used our purified drinking water so it wouldn't leave any hard water spots. But yes, just waterduckman said:Just water eh?
Good clean water there I take it, as I can see ya in the dome !
Answered other part of original querry by looking at the purdy pics a bit closer, lol.
Again, Awesome results!
Thanks man, checking this radio off this list is a PERSONAL achievement, kind of like the Discolite!caution said:What a save, congrats! MAN that's an awfully long time searching, given all of your collecting efforts, that really says something about how special it really is. The grilles turned out great! I suppose too that if worse comes to worst you could mold new keys.
My, Oh My, that pulls at the heart strings somewhat, it gets right to wear it hurts and I was half expecting the last line to be something like:Lasonic TRC-920 said:Thanks Trippy, I was hustling on this repair. I have nothing less than total admiration for both you and your efforts and I can't stress enough just how much inspiration your achievements have given me. Thank you.
4!!!! Damn dude, you could stack them up and live in them!blu_fuz said:I only use a q-tip and windex to clean chrome dust caps, it is the best way. If it needs a little more scrubbing power I use a rag with windex and do circles around the cap until it is as good as it will be.
PS, I only have 1 Wheely, but have had 4 total.
