Replacing midwoofers in my newly acquired GF-767

So just as an update. The new speakers do fit and look pretty nice, but I noticed that the temporary car speakers I was using sound a lot better on the treble side of things. Like I think they were making up for the lack of real tweeters, so I wonder if I just need to upgrade the tweeters before I can use these or something. Idk, but I think I'll stick with the car speakers for now.PXL_20250106_202604313.jpgPXL_20250106_203823995.jpg

So, here's what the Ford speakers look like when installed. I know it looks ghetto, (ha, pun), but they sound really good in here and I think I'll keep them for the time being. I think maybe if I can get a pair of real tweeters, I'd maybe be able to use these new speakers. Because they're really missing the treble I'm looking for is all. These jerryrigged Ford speakers made me spoiled.PXL_20250106_225442689.jpgPXL_20250106_231332314.jpg

With a rating of only 5 watts, (nominal? peak?), I doubt those speakers will provide the bass you're wanting. Especially given their very low price. You might want to browse Parts Express, they are one of the biggest sources of speakers. You can search by size and ohms rating. A few people here have also had luck using Alpine speakers, shown here --

I replaced speakers on two 767s and a 777, and this upgrade was my starting point for those. Threads for all three should be somewhere buried on the site. replaceme speakers of the proper size, fit, watt, and ohm rating are out there but I would suggest doing your due diligence in speaker catalogs to find them. Remember, 777s and 767s are NOT known for their bass, it was more of a mid bass sound, not the deep bass of other boxes.

I would like to mention that this is one of the better looking (cosmetically) 767s that I have ever seen, at least from these pics. They tend to be not built as robustly as a 777, at least from the half dozen I have seen.

The re-speakered 777:

It is in quite nice condition honestly. I was very much blown away when I saw it on the table at the record store. It was sitting there, staring at me with big beaty eyes. I had to have it lmao.

You’re hooked. There is no approved 12 step program for what youve got so you’ll have to wing it. A separate checking account for this “hobby” is the first smart move.

Oh for sure, it's already considered my baby, I will cherish it my entire life, and I'm definitely going to find every excuse I can to use it. It has pretty much taken on the role for playing music in the living room all the time now.

Felt like I should do a little update on the situation. The replacements I bought on eBay did end up showing up, but I ended up keeping the Ford speakers in the thing and just taping them in better, because the replacement speakers don't have as clear and crisp of sound on the very high end. I imagine this is probably due to the lack of real tweeters in the 767, and the Ford speakers seem to do a really nice job at making up for that and have excellent sound in this setup here. I'm curious if it would even be worth it to invest in tweeters if these car ones already sound good. The only benefit would be everything being screwed in properly.

Taping them in, you mean you used duct tape? The screw holes didn't match? You can buy or make an adapter plate to handle the screws. Or you could use Dynamat, that would do a better job than tape. Whatever you do, make sure the speaker cones are far enough away from the raised lip the original speaker sat on, or it will make contact and distort.

If you want more treble, you can get car type coaxial speakers for the outboard drivers, or at least get duo-cone drivers. They’re also called wizzer cones. That will save you the hassle of trying to fabricate some sort of tweeter mount.

I agree this is the best solution. But I would use a coaxial speaker with paper cone and paper tweeters trust me it makes a huge difference because their more efficient with the power and the frequency response has the more detailed vintage sound.

I showed above how I actually installed them. I have them spaced good enough to not distort. Tbh I know I can do better, but for now I'm sticking with the current ghetto (ha) installation, because I'm really happy with how it sounds, and it works.

I have those dual cone full range speakers on my Philips B7X14A and Philips B7X44A high end tube radios. Sounds so crisp and clear, amazing sound quality! Most of the Philips tube radios B5X, B6X series all had full range dual cones. I have all those in my collection.
Panasonic RS466 and RS4300 also have those dual cones.

Even the very hifi Pioneer SK900 uses duo cones for the outboard drivers. Don't even need tweeters with those.

I just realized the reason why the Ford speakers work so well, is because they are whizzer cones. I just now looked it up, and it shows them as speakers with a little horn in the middle. Which is exactly what these Ford speakers are.PXL_20250311_224145144.jpg
