The main reason is that most people are un-aware of the quality and sound that these units have. The looks make some people turn away before they give em a real chance to shine. These platinum edition Pannys are by far in the top 5 for boombox volume/bass and quality-thats why i own 4 of them and strongly advise any real tru blue bb collector to get at least 1, just not mine because i'm keeping them all!! ;-)

But a 2000's shelf system could achieve the same sound or better, and play digital media as well

But i don't collect bookshelf systems, only boomboxes! ;-) And my Kenwood home system beats any bookshelf system but that's another discussion for a different site!

But who is really going to carry a DT680 anywhere? Can it even take batteries?

To me it's a shelf system.

Ive probably owned 12 or 13 different 680s and 690s over the course of time..Still own a few.Ive been adding some rx dt 75s to the family lately(not a lot of low end out of em though)..Problem is finding cassette belts for those 680s-..Great sounding boomers..Has anybody had any luck with finding belts for those?.

With the DT680 having a similar power draw, same number of D cells and similar amp outputs as an M90, would that mean the M90 is best used as an AC only, shelf system? :-)

I hate the look of the 680 so much that it doesn't matter how good it sounds.

That said, I might pick up one up to power the tv sound out of my plasma one day, currently using a compo Marantz for the job with nice bookshelf Technics speakers wired up, but might swap it out for a 680 one day.

If I find one for next to nothing.

Rock On.

yes, 1 less deck to go wrong on the 650 and 60.I always thought the 680 would be a tad better with the 690's decks, but everything else from the 680.

You all have forgotten about the CT-XXX versions of these. The main difference is that these had all the features of the respective numerical cousins... without the CD. ;-)
