May I be the first to say...BOOOOOOOOOM!!!!! ;)

Another amazing job there, the stills just don't do it justice, the video really shows the full effect...and it rocks! Same as the M70, once you get over the idea of modding a grail then it's just plain awesome :)

A big :thankyou: for that. It is really a delicate task, gluing in the LEDs at the exact angle that allows the Tuning BAR to glide past. But the effect is very rewarding. Anyone who worked on an M90 knows how tight things are along that tuning path for the pointer. More to come....

Tonite, I have renovations to take care of so I can paint my office...

Sorry man, if that was a cheaper & flashy Lasonic level box, I might like the use of LED strips, but LED strips in an M90 or comparable classy box is straight-up tacky - especially when you can actually see the number of LED's in the strip... Those wild-ass colors don't help it either...

Personally, I'd prefer a Superduper styled white LED hook-up 'cause the effect is much cleaner/more subtle. To each his own tho...

Gotta agree with you, MONO. I've been thinking about a warm-white LED mod for my C100, but strictly for the purposes of longevity and reliability.

It's definitely a marmite box...you either love it or hate it...I'm a sucker for a load of bright lights so I love it but I can see why some would take the view that it was sacrilege to mod such a box...but as you say, each to their own :)

Ideally the bright part of the bulb should not stand out at all. The light should be evenly distributed with diffusers.
This is why I never liked the LED modifications on boomboxes. If the dial part looks all evenly lit up I would love it. I hate the bright spots near the LED.
Rising 20/20 bulbs are put at the right place. They are long filament bulbs that throe light to the ends of the plastic scale which in turn distributes it evenly along the dial length. The dial lights up beautifully on it. If one puts LED on the brushed ends of the acrylic dial it might look good.
I have Yamaha CR1040 with beautiful light green dial and VU meter lights. That is a perfect example of even dial lighting with diffusers.

Another example for excellent lighting with diffusers is Marantz 2245, 2325, 2385....reciever dials.

See how this is done in cars near the instrument cluster area. If light is not evenly distributed it is an eye sore. We don't want it to look like a boombox wrapped with LED lights like we do on Christmas trees.

:-) Just my opinion.

being that the m90 has a cult following there are going to be harsh critics of mods such as these . but at the end of the day it's your radio so who can really say what's good or bad as long as it don't affect me wtf do i care lol.

my opinion - would never do it to this box .
but if you want to do it to yours and show off the work and ask what we think , then be ready for at least a little grief :-D
and also be ready for some praise :-D

trust me i have had ,

led fever
white speaker fever
big box fever
lots-o-boxes fever
custom box fever
grail box fever
any box fever.

eventually all these fevers play themselves out ,
now i got , i just want a ****ing box that works fever lol.

either way i like the blue led's :-D

Lol :) Floyd I get what you're saying with the 'fevers'...makes sense. I suppose the thing to do is make sure the various fads don't ruin the end box for you once you've calmed down. I shall bear your wise words in mind :)

Tho in the meantime I still want to do at least one ridiculously over the top led job like the cpl's ;)

My thoughts have always been not to mod a box that's in good shape stock. I personally collect them as stock units, I don't even add LEDs to incandescent tuner lights. To me it changes the overall stock look of the unit and I personally enjoy the stock look. Now if a box is so beat to hell that it needs modifications then that's ok because the unit will never be same as stock. Again these are just my personal opinions ;-)

Heyya, all :-D

WOW!!! What a stir!! Well, I did want to have a different & dramatic effect & I guess I got a reaction, albeit mixed. ;-) I do appreciate everyone's input. I'm not going for the even, smooth backlight effect that some have suggested I do. For 1, anyone who has worked on an M90 KNOWS, its impossible to backlight that tuner dial because it is made of metal & has a mirror-like finish. Instead, I wanted something different than the RGB Backlight I made for the M70 tuner dial. I wanted a trippy, sci-fi, type of effect & the LEDs have a laser/holographic effect where the beams of light actually sink into the dial. It really is pretty sweet in person, once you get over the 'GRAIL' status.

Besides, at this point, you can turn the LEDs completely off, & it looks like any other M90, in good condition.

Wait until I drill holes in the face.

you guys haven't seen anything yet.... :jason:

Cheers,
Cpl

Did you "pimp out" a Lasonic too..?
Eeeewww. It's almost as though Liberace didn't die. That's quite an achievement, wasting both a decent sounding boombox and a warehouse full of LEDs. :sadno:
