Looking good.
Cant wait to see it re-assembled.
The dial should take really well to a different color.
You might want to add a led to the opposite side of the dial as well
to brighten the display , if even neccesary as leds will be brighter than the original
bulbs.

All in good time, my friend, all in good time. Like good wine, some things can't be rushed. Before I reassemble for good, I still need to:

(1) finish rubbing out the paint
(2) figure out and retrofit a LED (and design a robust on/off toggle module) for the dial lamp
(3) make up my mind whether I want to re-cap this box, just because it's apart and I don't want to open 'er up again.
(4) paint the back cover.

Nice!!!!!!! How the hell did I miss this thread!!!!

I do think it looks great. And will look especially killer displayed among some small red boxes!

After looking at all of FDs pics several times, I think I ultimately would have went for more subtle Blue... Not because I don't like the red, but because I tend to go for a more understated look and that is a color I somehow can associate with JVC more.

Plus, I think the blue might ultimately gel a bit better with the grey top and the already blueish speakers... Are you going to leave them blue, or maybe paint them black? (leaving the caps red, of course!)

M70's are quite plentiful, so maybe this thread will spark a rash of paintings. :w00t: Which could then evolve to a "best non-OEM paint job" contest at the next meet!! ;-)

WOW! That's a sexy M70! Way to go Norm! You know you want to recap it. Come on, if Alf re-capped his Norm HAS TO! HAHAHA!!! What are you going to do for the back cover???

Jaetee, I wasn't looking for subtle. I wanted a box that would make a statement but at the same time, not look cheesy. I think this is going to do it. Actually, I was torn between the copper and maroon. Had to make a choice so this was it. Not gonna look back but now, I also wanted to try the other colors too. The blue was probably the last choice for me simply because I think it's TOO JVC'ish. Anyhow, no plans for the speakers -- I'll reinstall them first and re-evalute the looks. Unlike many M70's with dirty, faded or stained speakers, these look pristine so I think that at least for now, it's gonna stay the same.

ALF, the back cover was cleaned and looks pretty good. But when I did a test mockup, the combination looked crappy -- old bare/naked plastic paired with the fresh maroon front cover. Nasty look. Sooo, it's gonna need it's own fresh atire. At first, I thought a fresh coat of charcoal/graphite (like on the Sanyo M9994) but I think that maroon would contrast better with Black. Maroon is out of the question since I've already used it all up and because its too much trouble to rub out with camera case finish and all those fins. Still undecided at this point. What do you think?
