The Panny RX-DT707 "Cobra Top" (usually had for <$200) comes to mind.

Not everyone's style, I know, but the sound that comes out of this thing was enough to convince me.
I've never heard any other high-end "Cobra Top" models, but I imagine they're on par with the 707, seeing that 909's and 75's tend to go for a bit more than the 707.
I've never heard one of those beasts but I sure want to. They must have cost big $$$s back then!

I've heard this one in person, quite impressive!

That is correct! Don't shy away saying it is an egg. I have an RXDT95 with remote. It sounds awesome. It got motion sensor to start music. If you walk near it will start playing music or radio station that you previously used.

From what I've read on the internet, where everything is accurate and true, the '707 retailed between $500 & $600 (U.S.) in 1992.

Probably gonna need to re-foam most Cobra-tops unless it's been done already
I didn't realize it at the time, but I got really lucky with this one. The foams are still nice and flexible, but I know it's a matter of time. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

:w00t: :-D It appears like these foams on Cobras are the second generation "better foams". I checked mine and it looks fine!

I have been testing the dt680 a lot, I really like that bb for disco/dance and music that have beats in it, for the modern rock I would like to try something else with more juicy mids and highs.

What do you guys love to crank to hear rock/metal that cost less than $500 in great cosmetic and working condition? :dog:

Panasonic rx-5080,5085,5150 are all really good for rockin! Usually can be found in pretty good shape. All less than $200.00 and fairly easy to service. Plus they all have the classic boombox look.

Ok, well I think the 3 piece boxes are probably going to list strongly in your pole as they generally don't pull the big $$$$s plus they tend to sound better to the due to the separate speaker cabinets.
The Yamaha PC-8 is the best under $500 Boombox I've heard for bass, treble and general listenability. The Panasonic RX-DT680 would be my second choice as it also sounds great but the 90s build quality drops it to second place in my list.
Incidently, both boxes did need work and as such, were EBay cheapies. The important thing is that they ended up performing well after some standard maintenance. Dispite how 'mint' a box is, most need at least a little TLC to work right.
James... :-)
Which one has the most and deepest bass? The pc-8 or the 680?

does the yamaha pc-8 plays loud? it's 20 watts, would you say it's a better sounding boombox than the dt-680?

Both boxes are 15 watts RMS per channel. The PC-8 plays louder but neither are super loud sounding like, say an M70 due it's stronger mids.

Due to the proper wood speaker cabinets, the Yamaha sound has a more balanced sound but both sound great, either would absolutely thrill someone used to the sound of your average mid sized 1 piecers.

From my experience, Aiwa CS-600, very good bass, not too heavy to carry, but it´s big, it does shake the house, very well built deck, fairly easy to service, soft-touch deck and perfect in overall, no bass or treble controls but this sure is the best tone box from this range. Picture from Stereo2Go.

I thought the PC-8 wasn't good unless you changed the speakers.......? Someone made a thread about changing the speakers in it, and said it worked wonders.

I changed the speakers in mine as the originals had been poorly refoamed and ruined in the process. The speaker cabinets are specifically tuned to the original speakers. My replacement Hitachi speakers work ok but having the originals in good condition should sound even better.

[attachment=28511:turbo_bass_generator_aw2694_1696214.jpg cant believe ive reccomended this but dont knock till youve tried it....the bass is phenomenal....no great shakes compared to a kaboom but much better than other nineties eggy offerings  the dt680 was also a great nineties box,not sure how budget concious they are though....last time i checked they were still costing very good money  exellent choice on the d8614 for eighties boxes az bro, always a good contender.aiwa 600s seem exellent and modestly inexpensive too, just try finding one for sale ;-)
