I don't know if the topic already exist. :hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm: I wish to start a list of low priced (less than $500) boomboxes that produce amazing sound. :newyear:

The Panasonic DT-680 is often mentionned and still affordable:

What about the JC Penney boomboxes... from what I heard some models sounds very good! :agree:

There is also that Magnavox D 8300 who seems to produce sweet tone:

Any suggestions?

Under $500? Quite a few good ones. If you know where to look and often enough. Good Toshiba bombeats, Sanyo's, M70s, Lasonics. All these sound good. Sony FH's and a big range of 3 piece units if you like them.

Dear me, that style of BB by Magnavox/Philips surely has to be one of the ugliest BB's ever designed?

This Philips sounds amazing, and can be picked up usually quiet cheap.....

I agree with this, these D8614 boxes by Philips produce a nice, warm, rich sound.

Yeah I would have tried a list under $200 maybe 🤔. For around $200-300 the 20/20 and Crown 950 has an amazing sound 👍

Hell I bought a clairtone 7980 for $168 shipped from Canada so it's a matter of holding on to your money and then when you see a good deal jump on it and hope you get it. Oh I sold mine to ned 209 for the same amount I paid for it that's why I don't have it anymore.

GE 3-6035A and Telefunken CR-100. Both of those can be found for $100-150 easily.

I've never spent more than $200 for a box. There must be hundreds of models of nice sounding boxes out there for under $500. Maybe a thread discussing what's great for under $100 might be more interesting!?

But let's include some loved boomboxes in great cosmetic condition and perfect working order. Often a great sounding boombox below $100 will have problem like tape desk not working, I just want to be sure we talk about the price for models in neat condition :-D :-D

Price reference found on ebay. Local deals and thrift shop deals not allowed :choco:

Ok, well I think the 3 piece boxes are probably going to list strongly in your pole as they generally don't pull the big $$$$s plus they tend to sound better to the due to the separate speaker cabinets.

The Yamaha PC-8 is the best under $500 Boombox I've heard for bass, treble and general listenability. The Panasonic RX-DT680 would be my second choice as it also sounds great but the 90s build quality drops it to second place in my list.

Incidently, both boxes did need work and as such, were EBay cheapies. The important thing is that they ended up performing well after some standard maintenance. Dispite how 'mint' a box is, most need at least a little TLC to work right.

James... :-)

The Panny RX-DT707 "Cobra Top" (usually had for <$200) comes to mind.

Not everyone's style, I know, but the sound that comes out of this thing was enough to convince me.
I've never heard any other high-end "Cobra Top" models, but I imagine they're on par with the 707, seeing that 909's and 75's tend to go for a bit more than the 707.

That is correct! Don't shy away saying it is an egg. I have an RXDT95 with remote. It sounds awesome. It got motion sensor to start music. If you walk near it will start playing music or radio station that you previously used.
