Yeah the router just wants to rip out chunks when cutting plywood. At least you can use wood/body filler to clean it up.

True! It's not too bad but it will need a little filler on a couple of corners - front panel of course!

I've got to get this V3.0 finished as it's grandfather in the background is demanding my attention: :-) I know it's' sacrilege but these GF-9696s do make great workshop radios! :-)View attachment 18589

Boomus Fidelis
kinda pimpin' to use a nice radio for work , i do it sometimes because fk it i spend more time working than i do enjoying the radio's so why not combine the two. my problem is deciding which one i want to give up to the horrors of the life of a work radio.

Lots of things to do yet.
Cheers.
Hey Hardman, I think it's great you're having a go building your own mega box. I belong to a couple of DIY audio forums and there is no shortage of DIY Boombox threads.

Through out my research of these threads, I have discovered that it's a scientific fact that 95% of people who talk about building a DIY box never do!!! :-). So keep going dude, you'll get it done and it will crank.

Now after saying all of that , your box is going to be a little on the heavy side once the front and back panels go on - how much do you reckon?

What size speakers are you going with? 8s might fit or maybe some 6x9s.

You should start a construction thread with all the details of your build! :-)

I've just been down to the local Bunnings store and picked up my spray painting supplies.

You see a lot of guys using much cheaper brushed on paint on their DIY boxes but I just can't stand the shitty finish a paint brush provides. :-)

As per usual, I'm using an All Purpose Primer spray pack. Over that will go my usual Flat Black enamel spray pack. I usually go through half a tin of primer and almost two cans of enamel top coat for a box this size.

Update: 24/5/15

Paintwork was completed 2:30pm yesterday. As the surface of box was so well sanded, the 'flat black' paint has actually come out looking like 'low sheen' - I like it but it does show the odd blemish here and there that I missed. I'm happy with the result though - finish wise, it's certainly my best one yet!

I'm leaving any further work on the box for 24 hrs to allow the enamel paint to harden up sufficiently so I can mount the speakers etc.

Update 25/5/15

Assembly time - this is the best part of these builds! :-)

All the messy, sticky, dusty work is done. You're now left with a freshly painted cabinet and clean and shiny new parts going in. The wiring part is pretty straightforward from this point. I'll take a few pics if anyone's interested but it's just lots of soldering etc. I've gone with high quality and properly colour coded wiring this time around (red and black) power wires! :-)

She'll be fired by tonight.

As per my first 2 builds, I've still got the access door, handle and feet to go. The handle is on order. I scored a freebie (roadside) vintage sheet of thin, high quality plywood today with a beautiful, real timber veneer for the access door. I'll be painting it black of course with a volt meter being installed in the same position as per my previous builds.

Completed pics and a vid to come.

Thanks for your patience guys with this long and rambling thread but I've got to share my enthusiasm for these DIY projects with someone! :-)

James.... :-)
