Best Sounding Portable Boxes?

Hey everyone,

So the question here is, in terms of sound quality, which boombox has the best possible sound, while remaining light weight enough to be lugged around via strap on your back all day? As we all know the giant grails are capable of putting out a wall of sound, but sometimes bringing that amount of funk with you isn't very practical for your back or the setting.

Recently I've been spending a lot of time riding around town with my friends on bikes, and in fact that's what we did celebrating the 4th of July. My collection is up to 4 boxes now, the Lasonic L-30K, a JVC RC 838, a Sanyo MX-650K, and finally a Sanyo M9935K, the latter of which gets the most play time because I can bike for hours with that thing strapped to my back. I've thought maybe something like a JVC M70 might do the trick, but when that thing is loaded with batteries, I have a feeling it'd be just as heavy as my 838.

This is how we roll!

What do you guys think!?

Hah! I would love to see someone try riding their bike around down with a 777 on their back! First time you have a hard landing on your bike, that strap is breaking and you'll have little pieces all over the pavement.

Maybe I should start doing curls with my boxes and pushups with them on my back?

The M70 puts out some nice sound, but yeah, it becomes a beast to carry after a while. I found myself switching hands quite a bit while carrying it around on my vacation last week.

However, having the Tiki strap from Joe sure came in handy at times.

Fatdog, I've been wanting to get one of those repro straps blu_fuz does for my 838, they look AWESOME! Especially the one that Lasonic TRC-920 had done in green.

This is the trick! I change hands every block I walk so I don't get tired arms.

That said, some boxes are just so heavy it's ridiculous. The Fisher-492 being one of the most brutal I've carried to and from work in recent times.

The RISING 20/20 and Crown 850 are very light weight boxes I've found, can carry those all day with no issue.
The big Lasonics are excellent carry around boxes too. I think the M90, C100, BigBen and GF-777 are pushing the boundaries of common sense if you're walking a long way though, but for short half hour or so walks I find them managable.

I don't use straps though*, so a lot of what makes a box easy to carry is not so much the weight but the balance, epsecially heavy boxes with short handles.. they wear you out quick smart.

*I do use a strap on the Crown 850, of course, no handle.

Rock On.

Small enough with superb audio for me are the Aiwa 990 and the Toshiba RT-S932. Both have plenty of bass and clarity that is beyond their size.

Nice pics!!!

I think the Crown 850 would be a rather good choice. Strap, not very heavy, good sound, looks fantastic
The Hitachi 3D8 is pretty light as well while kicking out some solid bass. Doesn't look very classic though.

My Helix HX-4630 (CCE CSC1000 Jumbo aka) has a good sound and is light weight for carry around (but I don´t use them in a bicycle).
Have a similar size with JVC RC M70.

Im gonna go with Glu on this one...and ira
the most bang for the weight...rising 20/20..
the lasonic trc 931is light as can be but will shatter like glass BEFORE it hits the ground...
....but if ira says aiwa...then go aiwa
Id go 20/20

try to score an aiwa 950 -
its small and sounds very strong on just 6 batteries
:agree:
It's a very portable box, small, and sounds amazing. Very good highs with some bass makes this my favorite one to carry around. Also, it's very feature packed.

My vote would go for the M70. If you get the strap then weight is not an issue. It is a great sounding box with volume to spare and has very good battery life. The Lasonic TRC 931 would be my second choice as it has decent sound, gets very loud and is incredibly light. The 20/20 is a nice box but it just doesn't get loud enough for outdoor use, although I do like the sound when listeing to it indoors.

Your opinion about M70 can not be considered (because you is a M70 Addicted) :w00t:  ;-)

Cheers.

What about the SCR-8/Realistic 14-778? I know one of them has a built in hook for a strap...not to mention the LED's would look killer at night! On a side note, I've been really wanted to get one of those and then switch out the all red LED's to a staged green-yellow-red setup.

I guess your M9935K is the lightest?

The RC838 is more than 16 lbs, so there's no way I'd carry that on a bike. Ditto the M70.

I would suggest something like a Panasonic RX-F4.......it only weighs half as much, but puts out tremendous sound for its size.

Yeah I would say it's not only the lightest when fully loaded, but it also has the smallest surface area out of the group.
