The 920 has warmer bass than an M70, at lower volumes at least....but it can't go as loud, nor is it as detailed/precise

Just my opinion

People want M70's, 920's...9696's etc...but they seem to always sleep on the almighty Telefunken CR-8200...now THAT is THE box "all around" IMO for it's size...i have multiples of all boxes and have done extensive testing throughout the years and the Telefunken is awesome :-D . I do have 1 of my many M70's that will destroy about anything...it's another one of my "WTF" rare boxes that makes no sense to me with it's huge sound

Yep

Plain-looking, and only average build quality, but fantastic sound.

Are you saying you have one M70 example with exceptional sound, better than the rest?

Lav's favourite bbox ! :-)
D8614.
I would choose JVC M-70 for the sound and
GF-9696 for its looks. I dont know why but all Sharps
imo have a flat sound except ofcourse the flagship
model the GF-777 all others seem flat .
For the same size box i d also like the sound of Crown 850
and Crown 980.

Yep sure is my fave Dimitris :-D though I would still love to get my hands on many other boxes :-) I just love the look of the 9696 and not so much the m70. I think most jvc's look bland and boring even though they perform well. So in a nutshell I would take the 9696

The 9191 and 8989 might sound "flat", but the 9696 does not. It has both deep bass and nice highs. At least, my GF508SB does (it's just a Japanese 9696).

As for the Crown 850/980, yes, both of those have more bass than an M70 IMHO. Yes the M70 is louder, but I don't care about that.
