I agree that a mint 9696 will probably cost more than a mint M70, but one that needs work will sell for much less. I have seen them go for as little as 200-250€. Besides, even if the seller claims that it's fully functional, it is not worth paying a heavy premium for it, because odds are very high that he's lying or has not tested it fully.

A fully restored (sliders) M70 is really hard to beat. When those controls are working properly, it really makes a difference in the sound.

As to the 9696, I have several but not one is working good like it should and I've not had the time to tend to any, therefore hard to say it's better than an M70. To me, quality wise, the 9696 feels more rickety and the grills while neat that they pop off also means they get loose and can fall off too. In this regard the M70 feels more durable especially as a portable.

The 9696 however looks dope and hard to top aesthetics wise. Unless of course if the JVC is lit with an SD led kit, then the 9696 can't touch it -- just bring to party and put next to each other and watch the folks gravitate to the jvc to checkout closer!

Bottom line is that no matter which one you have, you'll always long to get one of the other and no collection is complete without an M70 and whereas I can't really say the same in reverse, still it's hard to pass up the eye candied sharp. Verdict: get em both.

Love threads like these. We like to see a few more going. Like WX1 vs CS-880, M90 vs S90, M9994 vs TPR-950 that kind of thing.

Boombox shoot out!

I seriously didn't realise how much love there was for the 9696 til I read this. I expected everyone to be going nuts for the M70, thoroughly surprised at the love for the 9696. And also shocked at the apparent value!!... glad I got mine for free!

Rock On.

The M-70 to me is a work horse. One of the most better built boxes ever.

In fact it was the M-70 that gave me the fever.

The 9696 is also a good looking box but I would lean more towards the M-70. Even though the M-70 looks are not appealing to some it is a solid box with great sound. IMHO.

Haven't been on this site for quite some time, and just stopped in to see if there is anything new and exciting. I saw this thread and laughed to myself! Are you kidding me?? When I joined stereo 2 go back in 2002, I soon found out there are some people who stand up for sharp boomboxes. I will probably get booted off this site for stating my opinion here but going to say it and get it off my chest once and for all...... Sharp never knew how to make good audio equipment. I owned a few and sold them quickly for they tainted my collection. Anybody can make a radio that looks awesome but the inside guts, the plastic parts cassette deck ( fisher price), gummy cheap belts and tinny muffled sound and hollow flimsy plastic that creaks when you pick one up with the handle......major over rated brand of radios. I stated this years ago also, sharp can make one mean microwave, but boomboxes? No. JVC M-70 is the benchmark for all other upper mid size radios to look up to but will never be or beat an M70. Period.

I've never owned a 9696 but always thought they were good looking boxes. The upper mid sized box I thought that compared well to th M70 is CS-660. Size and sound are similar and it has knobs not sliders.

The 660 has nowhere near the power of the M70.
I agree with SD...unless you have an M70 dud  . The M70 really grew on me over the last 2 years...but i still find it boring to look at but for sound/size...it's a top contender and REALLY rugged :-D

For me it's all about the warmth. I couldn't care less how loud a box is.

M70's just don't sound very warm. Detailed, yes, loud, yes, but not very warm.

A good thing I have two of each.... problem with the M70 is the collectors market is saturated with them. They're not that exclusive and after a while not that interesting to look at. They do sound good when healthy though but not massively more powerful than a 660.

i would put my lasonic 920 against either box for build and sound . looks wise forget it 920 all the way , although that sharp is sweet.
