That's right Floyd, i can get a box out, Play it, Plays ok, then i put it away, leave it a few months, get it back out to play again, thing won't work.. i bought a GF999 last year, belts were gone, bought new belts, cassette decks played great except APSS, when i tried to use it the motor would just die, but rew/ff on their own without APSS was ok, well the decks were working great, Put it away, got it back out about 3 months later and went to play a tape, both decks dead, the leaf switches and micro switches are ok, seems like the 12v to the motors are missing, Probably a Transistor Blown, but i did nothing to it for it to blow. This happens all the time, i was playing a GF8989, Deck just Died, that was a Transistor that burned out because i saw it burned, Bought a new Transistor from Ebay and got it working again. but again, i did nothing to blow it.
In my opinion the sharp 777 series and the conion c100 are two of the most finicky boomboxes on the planet. if anything is off or misaligned these things just act a fool.
The tape decks on the 777 series are a pain in the ass and on the conion just getting them apart is risky especially if the tape deck stuck in place and trying to realign the internal frame with the outside casing makes you want to cry. On these two models that alignment is critical because if anything's off none of the buttons want to work right.

The TC999 and C126 are worse than the C100. The pots are bad quality, and so is the tuner, its stereo lock is weak. They are basically just "looks" boxes. They're twice as big as the sound justifies.

i repaired a GF777 for a friend a few weeks ago, stripped it and cleaned it inside and out and replaced the 2 Amp Ic's, while i was testing it i thought i'd get my GF999 out to compare the 2, My GF999 decks are just dead though, they worked when i put it away, but when i got it out again to play it, they were just dead, i think its definitely a transistor because of the same trouble i had with the GF8989. and both decks are gone, not just one.. so it's missing volts going to the motors.. just a pain in the butt though because these things just break down at the blink of an eye. hardly worth buying them unless you love to be constantly stressed and depressed. i love the GF999 though.

I love the 777 series but like you said anything can go wrong with these at anytime and it usually does.
You are forced to work on them then they stab you in the back. How do they get away with it lol.

i've had a few radios that did that, a Panasonic Rx660 years ago, a few Jvc Pc5's did it. and a Sharp WQ t282 a couple of months ago, its pure dog s h i t when that happens. but i've re-foamed a good few speakers now so i just re-foam them, i hate changing the originals for some others unless they are real poor quality but replacements, they just don't look right, and most of the time they don't sound the same either.

I usually use speakers from other boomboxes if I replace the speakers.
Your right replacement speakers just don't look or sound the same.

I have noticed there are about 500 rare boomboxes on eBay at any given time.
And in the rare event that something actually is rare it's usually a piece of s*** nobody wants anyway. it just so happens it's rare.
Untested means it has been tested and it turned out to be toast but they still want full price.
Everything works great except for the five things that don't work.

These people who think something is rare because they only made 50 of them no they didn't only made 50 there's only 50 left after the rest of them got thrown in the dumpster.

the only thing that is rare about these is if they are actually working as intended.....if you ask me they are worth less than they were years ago....what is the point in having doorstops that they are asking full price for.....im glad i am finished with them lads

What about the things that buyers say?

I only ask this because I've had some recently that disappointed me. I'm sorry if these people are members of this site, but I'm gonna have to rant.

I've sold a few boxes on Facebook Marketplace. My prices aren't low, but i accept almost any offers.

I sold a Hitachi TRK 9100e to an 'enthusiast'. It's not great. There are marks on it and covers missing on the back of the speakers. But the buyer was someone who 'loved the retro look of it' and was 'looking forward to spending hours getting it back to the best condition'.

I also sold an Aiwa CS250 to someone who wanted it 'for their Gran'.

I don't take much notice of what buyers say because it's none of my business what they do with those boxes.

Both of them were on ebay within a week. One for nearly 4x the price and the other for 5x the price i sold them for!!

They probably knew or thought they could make a profit off those boxes and searched eBay or googled it to see how much they could potentially make.
One negative thing about collecting is that there's always people who are just out to make a f****** dollar they don't give a f*** about the boxes or what they represent they just look at it as retro but to me it's the thing I've been used to all along and can't really accept anything else. That retro look is what I call normal to me .

The hilarious thing is when a friend brings a box over for a "minor" repair and expects it to be a quick job as well as reasonably priced.

Some of these parts are about as rare as hen's teeth and a fast job is not going to happen.

I made the same experience with records. I buy two or three copies of records I know are going to be sought after. Sometimes I want to pass on the joy of owning a limited item of your favorite artist for the original price. But that's nearly impossible because the record will pop up for the (hyped) market price eventually.

A way to avoid this is to put stuff up for the market price or a tad below and give a big discount when a buyer shows interest.

A few years ago i bought a Discolite for £150, put new belts on the decks, sound was "OK" but not awesome, kept it until i got bored of the fairy lights, then i sold it to a friend for £200, when he was buying it i warned him they were cheap and not of great Quality, but he bought it anyway (i think he was actually drunk at the time), he had it for a few months, used it a couple of times and told me he didn't like it, asked me if i wanted to buy it back for the same price of £200, i said no and told him to put it on ebay cos he will get more than £200, so he did, he sold it for a mind blowing £450, then seems that a couple of weeks later the buyer either discovered they are garbage (or thought he would try his luck at selling it for a profit) , and it was back on ebay again, i think he got about £500 for it if my mind serves me right, i couldn;t believe it. totally baffles me what these things sell for, i felt guilty taking £200 for it. i thought it was worth less, not worthless, i mean worth less than £200 lol.. now they are going for the amounts of money that only idiots have in their possession. shame they didn't have as much brain cell capacity to stop them buying one for crazy money.

i also had a Massive Elta masterblaster, i hated that more than most boxes i have ever owned, They look nice, but they are complete junk, They sound no way as good as they look, and they have the cheapest components in them, tape decks are junk with the crappy cogs that start making a grinding noise and slipping teeth, Never again..
Sorry to all discolite fans and Elta Fans, that was nothing personal.

I had my chance at buying one of my grail boomboxes a while ago. It was pick-up only, but it was close to me. I just couldn't afford it at the time.

The thing is it was a box that i would NEVER EVER have sold. The value didn't matter. It's a stunning bit of kit. I would have stared at it every day and caressed it and said 'you are mine'. :)

It went for £180. That's a lot of money for me.

It was back on ebay this week. And IT SOLD FOR........

any guesses?
