So, the Craigslist Discolite from the threads below is now 90%. I have to say...It cleaned up WAY better than I thought it would...

First Thread
Second Thread

Here we go...

As you could see in the first pictures, it was dirty and sad looking....

20140819_203241.jpg20140819_203341.jpg

It opened up pretty easy. I could tell the box had never been opened. It had that Virginal SNAP on the twist of the screw driver. Thats the BEST!

FILTHY INSIDE! I found one loose screw floating around (hey, don't we all). I also found 2 more EQ sliders and many spider legs, dirt and dust.

20140820_141947.jpg20140820_141951.jpg20140820_141954.jpg20140820_142001.jpg20140820_142443.jpg20140820_142446.jpg20140820_142447.jpg20140820_142501.jpg20140820_142506.jpg20140820_142508.jpg

20140820_142511.jpg20140820_142515.jpg20140820_142518.jpg20140820_142521.jpg
20140820_142523.jpg20140820_142526.jpg20140820_142727.jpg

Do you see it? The broken wire? It's the brown one. It should be soldered the the green PCB center left. That's why the lights in the center of the speakers weren't working. Now every single light on the box works!

20140820_142729.jpg20140820_142731.jpg20140820_142748.jpg

Into the garage sink for a good scrubbing. Used a plastic bristle brush, going with the lines in the back of the case to scrub all the dirt out. Then with a much smaller brush on the workbench and a spray bottle. Took about 20 minutes. Got it clean.

20140820_145009.jpg20140820_145012.jpg20140820_145018.jpg20140820_150507.jpg20140820_150511.jpg20140820_151413.jpg20140820_151429.jpg

Re-assembly of the back case, solder wire for lights, deoxit switches and buttons.

20140820_160811.jpg20140820_160819.jpg
20140820_160824.jpg20140820_160843.jpg20140820_160847.jpg20140820_160852.jpg

Cleaned up the wiring, tied stuff down to eliminate rattles

20140820_160857.jpg

Disassembly of the speaker's. I had to unsolder the pizo tweeters and all the woofers.

20140820_161500.jpg20140820_161503.jpg

Got to keep track of what goes where...

20140820_162032.jpg20140820_162041.jpg20140820_162734.jpg

By far, the front of the case was the worst. big time dust bunnies, grime, 25 years of splattered soda's, spilled beer, sneezes and road grime. There was no shine in this disco!

20140820_163621.jpg20140820_163624.jpg20140820_163625.jpg20140820_163626.jpg20140820_163628.jpg

I didn't dunk this in the sink because of the lighting rig. I cleaned it carefully with a towel, small brush, spray bottle of water and a microfiber cloth.

20140820_163630.jpg20140820_163632.jpg

It started cleaning up real nice. A little elbow grease...

20140820_163938.jpg20140820_170611.jpg20140820_170614.jpg20140820_170618.jpg20140820_170724.jpg20140820_170729.jpg

Reassemble speaker's and light rings. Resolder everything.

20140820_172333.jpg20140820_172338.jpg20140820_172344.jpg

Almost back together....

20140820_172600.jpg20140820_172607.jpg20140820_172612.jpg

Tested...Working!

Sound CHECK
Speaker Rim Lights CHECK
Speaker Center Lights CHECK
All sliders, buttons, knob! CHECK

Some quick Glam Shots!

20140820_181314.jpg20140820_181323.jpg20140820_181330.jpg20140820_181336.jpg20140820_181341.jpg20140820_181345.jpg20140820_181353.jpg20140820_181357.jpg20140820_181401.jpg20140820_181404.jpg20140820_181420.jpg20140820_181423.jpg20140820_181428.jpg20140820_181433.jpg

Thanks to our TOP NOTCH Member THAFUZZ, I now have a battery door on the way to replace my wod of electrical tape.

What I find interesting about this radio is that over the years I have heard the worst things about the build quality and I think a big percentage of that is perceived right from the handle. The handle is just the worst and it relays a mind set that the whole box it crap. After this full rebuild, I don't feel that way at all. I have other radio's that are way bigger pieces of crap! I have also heard many say the sound is no good. I think it sounds GREAT! I was expecting something that was totally unusable. Something so cheaply made that the sound is so poor you would never use it.

It's 180 degrees from that. With a solid handle, I would use this box regularly.

Speaking of handles, I have a handle coming with metal ends that I will fab in and see if I can raise the confidence level.

As for the functionality...
Every light bulb works as it should.
Deck 1 is missing a tiny "C" clip that holds one of the drive gears in contact with the other gear. I need to measure it and buy one. Deck two had the door that comes off. Turns out the plastic pivot points are busted off, but it's a supper easy fix. More on that later. Deck 2 plays perfectly. Even the counter works!

The radio works across all 4 bands, AM,FM,SW1,SW2. But it needs an antenna and base washers.

Line in works perfect.

All eq sliders, balance and volume are clean and clear with no crackle.

I am also missing the "Discolite" name tag on the right front grill...ANYONE?

To think, two days ago this radio was in a junk car potentially ready to be smashed!

Today it has been restored to it's former glory. Just imagine the story this radio could tell. 25 plus years of first being cherished and then being loved to death and finally abandoned. How many parties? How many loosened panties because of this box? How many beer's toasted and Bong Hit's Coughed into it?

She's still got her battle scars, those aren't going away....and I wouldn't want it any other way!

Yep, if this radio could talk.....

Fan-effin-tastic work man. You deserve this so much, and already it's looking like one of the best surviving examples out there but...

I've only ever seen them with one tag, so could it be that there wasn't always a second one fit? ;-)

OK, so during my search for images of these things, a few did come up wearing both their "audio visual" and "Disco lite" tags, but maybe yours, being a cougar, left its other one on the floor in its toy boy's house one night after it took him home from a club.
So many different brands, but only one would test positive for Madonna's lady batter. That (Vela) one appears not to have both tags, but when there's a picture of a bare arse in the way, it can be hard to see boombox.

Well I spent tonight working on one of my M9998Ks so the build quality of that new box of yours does look a bit basic....... but who cares!! It's a super cool box! I'm glad the flashing lights fault was an easy fix. I'm also glad the amps and tuner are healthy - that can be a deal breaker right from the get go. With the handle mod and the incoming genuine battery cover, you've got the deal of the year my friend!!

Congrats on a great box and thanks for the comprehensive photo display of your work so far.

James..... :-)

P.S. I bet you had a huge smile on your dial when you fixed those flashing lights with a simple solder joint repair!!

Yeah, there were some nasty things inside this box. Just about the only thing missing was a hypodermic needle and an old tire!

I'm trying man. There are so many people on this site that have reminded me what it is to "Live" the boombox lifestyle. Having a radio with you at all times, sharing music and the happiness that comes with it. It brings me allot of job to share music and I have a feeling once I get out with this radio that it's going to make allot of people smile!

OK, that's right. I forgot it had that "Audio Visual" tag. It absolutely had something mounted on the right side grill as there is are stamping holes in it. They are VERY hard to see, but when I had the grills off and washed them I could see them. I first though "WOW, the workmanship and QC is crap on these" because I could tell it was machine stamped. I thought they just let it pass, but then I realised it was a pattern and then realized it was for another tag.

OK, "Audio Visual" tag ANYONE? I think Max made one of these once?????

Yeah, it's basic for sure (and glad for it) And YES, so happy the amp works and all the functions. How it managed to survive in what ever environment it was in all these years is amazing.

BTW, I have many more pictures of the inside connections of the wiring if anyone needs them. Just hit me up.

Once I saw that wire off, I was 80% confident they would work. It wasn't till I started reassembly and putting the front and back case together that I was able to confirm.

SIDE NOTE: The lights in the center of the speakers will not work if one of the lights on one side are not plugged in. Basically, both on either left or right have to be plugged in with a good bulb to NADDA!

Yeah, for a 5-8w speaker. Member Miles had found the patent on these speakers while working on his Boombox Creators documentary. The discolite holds a patent for speakers with holes through the magnets and is the only speaker to use this design.

I have a few radio's I have to get into that I know are going to be Uber complicated. not looking forward to it.

But...."You new the job was dangerous when you took it Fred" - Super Chicken

Good question....followed by another question. The lights come on stronger the higher the volume is pushed. So when it is CRANKING the lights are more predominant. Prior to this rebuild they were very sensitive. Now with the centers on, they seem to be on more than not.

IS THERE A POTENTIOMETER TO ADJUST THIS RATE? maybe I bumped it or with the center's on, it changes the sensitivity?

Or I just got lucky on the shot :dunce:

Crazy find and a fantastic restoration! The box must be so happy now!
I think it is. It resides on the shelf just above the 777z (the box it ripped off! :-O   ) in a museum of other masterpieces. What radio wouldn't love that?

With the white speakers showing? Yeah man! I like that one too.

I can't wait for next years "Relay For Life" Cancer walk and fundraiser. This time I will be walking AT NIGHT with the Discolite and the J1. That should blow some minds!

Man that box cleaned up nice. And man you work fast, Chris! One day in your hands and it is close to show ready. I have several, several boxes I need to take apart and give them a good cleaning and fixing.......and I've had them for a while now. Good work.
