I can take a good picture, I just won a photography contest with one of my rodeo ones.

The 5700, ummm where do I start, sound quality isn't terrible, I wouldn't call it great either, it just doesn't have a distinctive sound like some nationals do have, it's a very neutral sound, slightly warm but not really noticeably so. Mildly hi-fi, but not punchy at high volume at all. In fact to my mind pumping the volume exposes the sound flaws, it's much nicer sounding at half volume.

It's a looker, one of the prettiest boxes ever made, I am biased to woodgrain though.

to sum up, not the best National you can buy. I'd say look at the 7000 for better sound.

Edit: waits for Rick to chime in.

It's a really good box but never released here in the US. Japan is a really harsh environment for boomboxes and metal corrodes badly there. Most boomboxes have deeply oxidized/corroded controls. Not just the invisible corrossion you see in our boxes. But the thick green cruddy stuff. If those aren't properly cleaned off, the box will sound crappy.

I would say, it's built like a tank -- super heavy -- moreso than the RX-7000 although like Terry said, I would give the nod re bass to the RX-7000. Overall, I like this model and it's really purdy. If you can afford one -- get it. Mine sounds really good.

HERE COME THA CHIME!

I'm just revisiting mine as I've not had her going for a while and my memories of the sound weren't all positive.

The looks speak for themselves, it a gorgeous box that is one of the classiest designs ever. Feature packed and high quality through and through.

The sound, I had poor memories of. Flat and dimensionless. But upon revisiting her I'm changing my mind!

Theres a nice amount of detail and range. I must've been listening to music that was really not designed to be played on her previously.

I'd put the sound personality in the upper echelon of mid to late 70s portables. And by this I mean very good mids and highs. The bass chokes and farts about with more modern music, but classic 70s rock sounds stellar on the 5700. It's like a TPR-950 with a bit more grunt. I really thought mine may have needed re-capping or something when I first got her, but time has definitely changed that. It's horses for courses with most radios, but this model will give you great sound if tit was released in her day.

It's also easy to work on the deck in this one too, if that's a help.

Rock On.

.
If it sounds as good or better than the TPR-950, then I would say it's a top-tier box.

i often wonder how many opinions of certain models are based on experience with a box that is not in proper working order?

It's definitely up there in the detail of the sound, like a TPR-950. It's not 'better' though, it has more grunt, but it craps out quickly in the bass department, like a TPR-950. Overall it's louder, but not better. Very similar sound personalities though.

EVERY box I get that sounds weak I compare to reports on here to work out whether mine's developed sound issues. I was paranoid about it at first, but over time I've learned to trust my ears and learned what to expect.

To really give an informed opinion of the sound of a radio I always think you need to have an M70 to compare it to. This is 'reference' point for portable audio that proves a consistent radio to compare any other to.

If someone says a radio is 75% the quality of an M70 soundwise then I know it's still going to sound great.

Conversely I'd say a radio that is capable of 50% of the sound quality of an M70 would be an average sounding box in the grand scheme of things

thats an interesting comparo//evaluation procedure , rick

for the jollies --how do you % rate your m90s vs your m70 :-)
i say ....315% BETTER !!!

Ohhh, hmmm

I'd say an M90 is 150% of an M70. I'd say the same of an S90 or BigBen.

I base this on overall sound quality at a medium volume. Not a volume contest.
