A somewhat rare version of the JVC 550... with no FM... proving that rarer isn't always better!

Hmm,
BooShLa,
Sometimes, some disadvantages are not so important, but uniqueness is.

Boomboxes without FM band are common in late seventies and early eighties in the Middle East and North Africa.
Therefore, because this boomboxes can be found (rarely ) only in Europe, your RC-550 is VERY VERY RARE in USA.
I know this because my best friend from childhood (now sadly deceased) was received a gift, exactly RC-550, without FM band, from his father who worked in Libya like structural engineer in that time.
He bought it on the Airport free-shop in Tripoli.

I owned several boxes without FM band and I'm very proud of them.

Thanks, DT & NZ. I feel better about my 550 now! :-D

It's exciting to think that this mono was probably brought to the USA from the Middle East/North Africa. (I had no idea!) I guess that makes it extra special. Thanks for the good news!! :smooch:

The Subject says it all. No stereo units allowed here(OK - stereo playback to headphone is allowed!) - only the cyclops models.

i just love the panasonic rf 5410,and would love to get my hands on one.or a jvc rc 525.its so nice to see such a lot of love for mono radios here.normally they get overlooked as true boomboxes but,as ive had so many of them over the years, they are hard to ignore.granted, some of the cheaper and smaller ones are so tacky that even i wouldnt bother with, but, find a good one like some of the ones featured here and your onto a winner.the better ones can sound as good as,and if not better than, some stereo units.definately worth buying if they are one of the bigger, better specced out ones ;-)

Probably the best UK-built mono set ever, my Hacker Sovereign is common enough in its radio-only form, but the cassette version, in the same cabinet and with the same class A push-pull audio amp and 8x5 oval speaker is scarcely seen in working order as its (Nakamichi-supplied) tape transport is difficult to remove from the cabinet to work on. I found a way so mine works well now. :-)
That cabinet is made from solid timber, none of yer MDF here, and total weight of the thing is greater than that of the JVC PC11.
It takes 8 D cells and its bass performance - which Hacker Sovereigns were known for - has to be felt to be believed:

Wasn't that what the actress once said to the bishop? :-D

Thats a real beauty Beosystem!
Thanks, I never tire of listening to or looking at this one!

Yep, it's a hefty chunk of timber and a superb-sounding old thing yet the brand is virtually unknown outside of this little Island because the Hacker Brothers never considered the idea of exporting their stuff.

Thanks to the efforts of an enthusiastic collector in the UK, at least one of these is now resident in the USA where the brand's exceptional AM reception quality has been causing quite a stir.
For anyone on the forum who fancies something by Hacker, the UK enthusiast I mentioned trades on eBay UK as "judeatmoatfarm" and he's developed a justifiably good reputation for supplying these things to places they simply weren't available when new which, in the case of mine, was during 1976.

It makes a superb mp3 "dock" too thanks to the 5 pin socket on the back. Unlike some sets of its era, there's no need to press the record key to hear external sources, you just plug the lead in and it automatically stops whatever else it was doing.
I don't know whether it's because of the wooden cabinet and the big speaker, but classic blues, R&B and jazz just doesn't sound as good on any of my other boxes, not even the Technics SAC-05L has the "warmth" that suits those genres so well.
