I got this guy who keeps posting comments under my videos, saying anything from the early 80's is a jam box not a boombox. He says eggs are the real boomboxes, because companies decided to make them volumetrically deeper to get more bass ("boom"). It's like he doesn't understand that volume is 3-dimensional, and that increasing depth isn't the only way to increase volume. :dunce:

So is this true, that they were call jam boxes before they were called boomboxes?

I've been listening to music on all manner of devices since the 1950's and have never of the term 'jam boxes' so I think he lives in his own little world or a world that every day folk don't access.

'Jam box' my arse, it's a Boombox.

Reli, that guy posting on your videos is either ignorant or a troll. Don't let him get to you.

And as far as I know, the term "ghettoblaster" was more prevalent than "jam box".

According to Michael Brian Schiffer (Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Laboratory of Traditional Technology at the University of Arizona), the word "boombox", or rather, "boom box", dates back to the beginning of the 1920s and originally referred to the radio (a booming box). See The Portable Radio in American Life (Tucson & London: The University of Arizona Press 1991. Ch. 6, "The Birth of the Boom Box"). The word subsequently designated our beloved objects of passion. The Merriam-Webster online registers boombox with the current meaning, although it prefers the ancient spelling, boom box...

...but ignores jambox:

By the way, the M-W also knows ghettoblaster:

Jambox is the name given by Jawbone to a wireless speaker:

Fun Factor H.O.T. (In nomen est omen, Latins used to say) is obviously pulling your legs.

Jambox? Sounds crap. Ghettoblaster or boombox (and a few others in South London) is what I grew up with. Jam box sounds like something egg-like or tubular an aerobics instructor brings to the old age home.

Are you sure it’s not postender or some 14 year old kid with no pals?

This is the only thing I know of with "jam" and "box" in the title.
