My firs box bought from me with my own money was cheap Hitachi TRK 55 W for around 150 us (around 1986 - 87 i think). It was not a something stunning but it was a very big deal for me. I was helping my granny the whole summer break to make money from her . How many sleepless nights making mix tapes. Strange - i dont have it now and never think really to buy another one now. But the smell of the fresh opened box and the shiny boombox is still following me .

I bought this brand new in '87-'88 I think. It was the second new radio I bought. The first one was a Sanyo 9818, a real P.O.S.

Still have all but the Sanyo. Speakers blew and I stupidly tossed it. Really want to aquire another or the step up, which I'm trying to figure out which one it was. I think it was the M9990. Digital clock looks familiar

Mine was a Sanyo C-35, around 1986:

I remember I was dissapointed with the sound, compared with the Sanyo M9925 that was at home, but the C-35 was MY boombox, and I enjoyed it very much!

First portable radio I bought was a mono Centrex by Pioneer, I ended up taping it to my bike as it was pretty much destroyed, didn't keep this one:

First stereo boombox my dad bought for me was a Sanyo M9990, it didn't fare better than the centrex and ended up being used and abused, only thing I kept was the owners manual and I gave it to JT at the first Sunshine Mix Meet:

Well you know I bought my Aiwa 880 brand new and still have it today, I bought it thru a mail order catalog, I think it was from WDS (Wisconsin Discount Stereo), not sure what I paid believe it was around $300.


It''s not 100% mint as I bought it to be used and back in the day it was common to see me riding my 10 speed no hands holding the 880 with a basketball in the rack on the back, we went everywhere together !! I brought it to school a couple times but had to be careful as radios were not allowed, luckily it fit in my locker. During my short college days the 880 took a back seat to my second purchase a Sharp HK-9000,

which easily drounded out the new wave punk music in the college cafeteria, but the 9000 was a little to heavy to carry around and by than I was driving anyway. The HK-9000 was sold, still can not recall to who or why but Later when I
worked for the school district trying to get hired full time as a custodian, I was assigned the girls locker room !!!, the 880 found it self locked in one of the girls sports teams lockers waiting for after school for when I would sit it up on one of the dividing walls plugged in and cranking, nice echo down there in the locker room and no one else around !!

I'll join in..i bought my UNIMEX(a.k.a. MARC) brand new in 1978..and the sound is even today one of the best compared to other boomers..in bass it beats almost every box i have right now..

No, its not the Unimex JCR-4 with white speakers..mine is also know as the Marc..when you use the search option here you will see a pic..its about 7 kilograms in weight and it still sounds amazingly strong compared to other boomboxes..

I started buying radios when I was about 12. (1982) I first had a few basic "starter" models not worth remembering, like a Realistic - $130 range, but I was a fast upgrader.
Soon enough I had graduated to the more memorable Magnavox D8443 with the silver face, not the metallic charcoal version. Were they otherwise the same?

Although the sound quality was merely sufficient, (which ain't bad) it had other outstanding attributes that made it a favorite. I loved the look, the shortwave bands were always fun when boredom struck, and it was surprisingly light. All in all a worthy contender. I somehow lost it, but I will buy another one day soon.
In 1986, Sony rolled out the first box with a CD player, the CFD-5, and I snapped it right up. It was my first CD player. My first CD was a Beethoven compilation, followed by Depeche Mode's A Broken Frame. The unit's $499.99 + tax. price tag was equivalent to about $998 with adjusted inflation for today.

I would consider it a semi-portable as it had removable speakers and weighed more than yo mamma's butt.
Naturally, the CD player had bugs. It stopped working very shortly after I bought it. The return policy was there was no returning it. I had to take it to a dealer repair shop where they would repair it for free as long as it was under warranty.
They kept it for 6 months, finally releasing it to me a couple days after the warranty expired. Their repair lasted about 3 days, but of course by then the warranty was expired.
Can you imagine spending $1000 on a portable radio today and getting that sort of treatment?!
You can rest assured my next radio was not a Sony, but that purchase was in the 90's, so that story will have to keep for another thread.

I was born in USSR and this is where I spent 70s and 80s (and then some more). USSR also joined the boom box "revolution" but as with everything else the quality of boomboxes and the selection were quite poor. Foreign electronics were not sold in stores back then (with rare exceptions). My folks bought me first mono boombox in 1975 when I was in 7th grade (middle school).

Parents paid about 150 soviet rubles. To give you an idea, college graduate in high tech was getting a monthly salary of 130 rubles at the time. Very few people could afford this stuff in my school class (25 students) only one other guy had a boombox.

It got better when I got to college. In 1982 the parents somehow managed to buy Sharp GF-777z. No it was not a "went & bought a brand new boombox" scenario. They had a friend who happened to work in wholesale channels for timber industry which did some business with Japan. This friend helped with the purchase. It cost my parents a whooping 2200 rubles. The car at the time cost about 4500 rubles and salaries were at the same level - there was no inflation in USSR I believe my parents had combined salary of about 500 rubles (monthly). Needless to say I got very lucky (even more so with the parents - but this is the story for a different forum).

I enjoyed this Sharp immensely for about a year but then it developed a problem with the cassette door mechanism. The mechanism used a container with some viscous liquid to slow down the door opening. One of them developed a leak. Unfortunately Sharp did not have a warranty (or any) service in USSR. The thing was too expensive not to be perfect so I had to sell it. It fetched 2800 rubles in one of the Moscow stores that was selling used electronics.
