This question came up during a discussion with Tony.
He insists that the 777 is the the most known boombox but I am sure it is the M70 and its variations.
SO I wanted to open a poll...maybe it is something completely different like a C100?
Let's find out!

Any of those choices are any that WE would think is most popular. Ask anyone outside this forum what they think the most popular boombox is and they will look at you like this: :dunce:

Sure they will if you hit them with model numbers :dunce: .

I meant something like "which is the most recognized/iconic boombox".
IMO people would direct you to something with a classic, plain look. And the M70 is imo the model with the most variations and with the longest time being manufactured.

It surely wouldn't be the 777.

The one brand that people see in every commercial and every advertisment these days is a Lasonic or something that looks like a Lasonic:

crown but 99% of people would say Lasonic:

There are 2 different eras of boomboxes. THEN and NOW.

Are you asking what is the best known boombox NOW or best known in the 1980s?

Lasonic is 100% the NOW boombox.

Lasonic is 100% the NOW boombox.

The last pic is actually Mr. B the gentleman rhymer and he is a contemporary artist sporting the M90.
And, no offense, but your first pic has nothing to do with a Lasonic aside from the speaker guards... ;-)

I agree that the 931 surely is one of the more known boxes but it is not the first thing that comes to most people's mind I think.
I think the question of this poll is not quite clear. It is about the most common one that most people still recognize from back then.
Like when you show them a pic and they say "Yeah, I remember those being everywhere back then". Or "Oh, I have seen that one before."

One should also consider the demographics of this forum (I think we are over 50% american).

Anyway, it was probably pointless to start this discussion in the first place...

If you checked my post again, I didn't say all the pictures were Lasonic "The one brand that people see in every commercial and every advertisment these days is a Lasonic or something that looks like a Lasonic:"

And in "looking" like a lasonic, they are known for the 2 bars across the front speakers, hence why I posted the picture of the green boombox.

If I had to pick any boombox, for any generation, the top picked boombox would NOT be the 777.

JVC's no way, only collectors recognize what they are, everyone else is like, ok that's an old radio, so what? JVC's aren't flashy at all, so they aren't used by Hollywood very often.

Lasonic and C100 though, tons of people remember those, and they've been featured in more movies because they make more of a visual impact. So that's what gets my vote.

The 777 is the most popular on Ebay, that's for sure, but that doesn't mean that the general public gives a sh1t.

Interesting thread Max,

I did vote for the 931, but to be honest, I think I was voting more for the bars across the speakers...meaning ANY box that has those bar's is "THE" box people remember. I think that's why when we see advertising artwork like that Bud Light display, it has those bars  .It also has the C100 LED's!

Although I have never had anyone ask me if I have the radio from LL Cool J's album "Radio" like Peter has, of the people that talk to me about my radio's when I'm out and have one with me, I would have to say 40% of the people have fond memories like "Yeah, I used to have one of those" and the other 60% have had REALLY bad experiences that have left a bad taste in their mouth, like some punk ass kid tortured them with one back in the day   .
But normally those are older folks. :hoveround:

Anyway, I think it's either they remember 4 speakers (i.e. 777) or Bars on the Speaker Grills (i.e. 931).

I don't think it's the 777. I don't even remember seeing them back in the day, and the young people in my office had never seen one until mine showed up. A few of them even commented that the asymmetrical design looked "weird".

The M70 has the iconic "boombox" look. If you asked people to draw a boombox, they'd probably sketch a rectangle with circular speakers placed symmetrically around a center tape deck. Maybe even two antennas sticking up. The M70 wasn't the first boombox to look like that, but it's one of the best examples of it.

Honestly, it's likely the TRC-931. Simply because of it's overall media presence. From the Nickelodeon show Double Dare where these were given away every day to the cameo shots in movies, videos, and the AKA's out there, and now the new releases. This one would be hard to beat as far as recognition.

If you were to say...which one in 1985, it would be the RC-M90 because of L.L. Cool J and the Beastie Boys.

:-)
