things have been scarce in the thrift stores up here. however i think your best bets are church garage sales.
small thrift stores.
estate sales and well things along those lines.

Hi
im new here so feel free to rip me a new one if this is out of place ,unwaranted or just flat out wrong

but most of the thrift shops are getting these in but they are being sold almost as fast as they get them ( i did find a pretty nice klh this week for $7 with the cassette decks not working)

i would imagine the attrition rate was real high on boomboxes too

i seem to recall a lot of them bitd (im 41) getting kicked all over the place due to handball and basketball accidents

ill bet a lot more got wrecked on contractor jobsites and bouncing around the back of their trucks

That's very true, but I would've settled for his most popular response...

I found a 1979 JVC RC-767JW at a garage sale today. Wasn't in the for sale area but I asked the owner about it and his wife said to make an offer for it. I ended up buying that one and I saw a Sanyo at another garage sale that looked like a 9935k but wasn't sure and it was on the shelf in the "not for sale" section and my wife said "leave it alone, you just bought one" - I didn't ask the owners about it.

Saw a clean Toshiba 3pc but it was a entry level cheapy with no line in, so I passed on that.

I think, in general, you don't find a lot of "in the wild" grail boomboxes in the U.S. because we have been a "throw-away" society for so long. If something breaks, like cassette belts, just throw away the entire boombox. If something has a newer model, just throw away the old one. It has always been a race to "keep up with the Joneses" here. It's a shame really. :-/ In the States, the best time to have picked up all the grails would have been the late 1980's.

Unless you live near Birmingham, Alabama.
:agree: :agree: no way if you lived in bama

Jealousy will get you nowhere!

AZA if you swing through the south, and happen to stop in Birmingham, if my schedule allows, maybe you can check a coupple of my haunts. ;-) :-D

At least you'll be one up on Bobby.

You mean you live near a s**thole too?!?!?

Birmingham really isn't THAT bad. And I really am surprised that in California boomers are so scarce. Especially near military bases. :-)

Almost all of my in the wild finds this year have been a variety of the RX-DT680 type boxes and a couple of JVC Hyper-Bass models. Finding the older stuff in the wild has been poor at best.

Bill, you may be right about people in there 60's having them in there closest. I have a friend that knows I collect boomboxes. he was walking on his street when he saw an older gentleman working in his garage. The older gentleman was listening to his boombox. My friend walked up and noticed it was a huge silver "clairtone". He asked him if was interested in selling it, the old guy said "no". So there are still "grails" out there being held by people :'-(
