A truly flat response curve is difficult to find at best and truth is a ruler flat response would sound weak in Bass and Mid Bass since our ears have a tougher time with low frequencies. This is why most tested response curves will show a boosted Bass to mid bass curve. Bose has made a living on boosting the mid-bass to lower treble range because it's the most pleasing at least in the short term, people who aren't really in to hi-fi are initially highly impressed which is why this works for Bose. A truly flat response curve just isn't as exciting but if you know what your listening for it's the mark of excellence.
My shures have an almost totally flat response. I previously had a pair of shure se420's which are in essence the consumer version of the SCL5 pro monitors.

The 420's sounded better when I was just jamming out because they were tuned for "listening pleasure" with a much fatter mid bass. I switched to the SLC5's because my mastering was taking on a completely different sound than I wanted when played through other units. After starting to use the SCL5's and seeing how flat they were it really made a difference in my mastering process. The finished products sounds so much better on all systems than it did when i monitored with the se420's.

Of course, a flat response isnt for everyone, but what I listen for is how the track was originally meant to be heard, exactly how it came out of the studio. You'll never get that with a boombox but that's not really the appeal now is it? lol.
As far as external monitors the yamaha hs series are almost completely flat as well. If I'm in the studio not using in ears, those are the monitors I'm running.

and P.S. A couple industry gems I picked up from my father regarding BOSE in the past.
"No highs, no lows? Must be BOSE"

What does BOSE stand for?
"Bring Other Sound Equipment"

 As funny as I find the Bose marketing hype it does have it's place among people who just want to hear the fat in the middle and don't know or care about accuracy and true Hi-Fidelity.

If you've got to have Bose buy it used, new prices from them are rediculous for what you get.

It is a Philips spatial stereo 508 so it is actually not that bad ;-)
