What's the deal with Magnavox boomboxes?

Scrolling through listings for boomboxes on the Bay, I constantly see units from this brand, and they're almost always good-looking, but are being listed for damn cheap prices (for eBay boombox standards, of course). I've heard that the D-8443 has a VERY dysfunctional deck. Does this apply to a lot of their other models, calling for a bad rep, or what?

The D-8443 has a line in, but only if the record button is pushed and typically these have a stripped gear in the deck rendering them useless. So all you got is a radio. Good wall art.

Yes the led meters serve as recording levels & also on playback

Another great stereo if you can find one is the Philips D8514 Powerplay (I don't know the Magnavox AKA)

However, this has none of the 8614's tape deck issues as it is not logic controlled & I can promise you, the sound is very good, loads of bass & sweet treble & should be a lot less than a D8614!!
