What's the deal with Magnavox boomboxes?

Scrolling through listings for boomboxes on the Bay, I constantly see units from this brand, and they're almost always good-looking, but are being listed for damn cheap prices (for eBay boombox standards, of course). I've heard that the D-8443 has a VERY dysfunctional deck. Does this apply to a lot of their other models, calling for a bad rep, or what?

My D8443 is great. Full functioning tape deck shortwave and everything, perfect condition. Love it, like a junior version of the GF-777/999/1000. I really like the style.

I've got two D8444's (the aka under the Philips brand) and I like them, both fully working. Not a bass monster by any means but upgrading the mid speakers helps a lot. It is a cheap brand tho imo

The problem with some of the Magnavox boomboxes is they have a red colored gear in them that tends to either break or deteriorate. Thus rendering it unfixable. Now there is talk of some individuals on eBay that 3D print up replacement gears for these units. Now from what I hear(read)they are made of a plastic that can shrink an infantesimal amount causing some minor issues. They make the deck work again, but some of the functions I guess aren't that functional because of said skrinkage. I would also say don't be too afraid of "cheap" prices. Just means its most likely a fixer upper. Which of course most of these units are since they're all about 25 to 35 years old now. Your milage may vary.

Good looking boxes, but their build quality isn't as sturdy as something like a JVC or Sanyo. And the sound is just kinda average. But that is why the prices are low.

Sheesh, why the obsessing on pricing? If you like them, just get it already and enjoy it. You aren't buying stocks after all.

Some manufacturers came out with some units which were either very nice top of the heap stuff, or have flashy aesthetics or size which bolstered their brand and thus desirability. Magnavox isn't known as a major player and therefore, their stuff isn't as sought after. Since demand is what drives prices, that's why their prices are lower. Can't remember the last time I searched for "magnavox boom box". Just enjoy and don't worry about it.

There are some boombox models that are very good quality and the prices are not very high since they are relatively unknown. I like it that way and keep them a secret by not advertising it too much.

Because some people don't have the money to just buy it. I kinda HAVE to be frugal since I have no consistent way of earning cash other than holidays.

Wait, you said they were cheap. Now you can't afford cheap? I suppose then just shop at goodwills and take whatever they got or hope for someone to give you stuff for free.

Well you asked why people (or just myself, I couldn't tell) care about prices. I can afford cheap, I never said I was hoping for freebies to come by.

Ok, for further clarification, what I was trying to express is that I understand grumbling when prices are high.... people want things but can't afford them so they get frustrated. People do it all the time.

However, when prices are cheap, "then why obsess about prices, if you like it, then just get it already and enjoy it."

Well even if the price is cheap, one may still have certain priorities that set them from buying it anyway. It's all based on values.
