What would you pay ??

I have, on more than 1 occasion, paid the big $$$ for a boombox.

And im often not sure what to think when some members say
'i would never pay that much for a boombox'.

I just believe we all pay what we want to pay and what we can afford
to pay, be it $50 or $1500.

But next time someone pays the big coin for an M90 or such
consider the link bellow when you have to have it, you just
have to have it

I was not the buyer, just witness to the listing, and i say congrats to the buyer
too, he obviously really wanted this in his collection but i know what i would
rather between that and an M90.....

As for traditional boxes like M90's and whatnot, I'll pay whatever I can afford to pay - like if there was a box that cost $1500 and I wanted it bad enough, it'll get got. Not that I even have $1500 in the bank right now, but life is too short for me to sweat sh!t like that (high prices) and I'll be damned if I deny myself something i want... The upside is that the box can always be resold if buyer's remorse kicks in.

As always 'worth' is a subjective and personal issue but that thing went for insane money in my opinion, but I guess if you have the means and want something badly enough then why shouldn't you pay what you consider to an acceptable figure.

If I had the money I'd be all over Ebay and bothering other collectors here with silly offers for my most wanted personal grails!

But sadly, I can't justify any more box purchases for quite some time unless they're outlandishly cheap

Everyone has different interests and will pay top dollars for certain items. I have a ton of old Vintage gear in great shape that
some people would throw out since it isn't tiny and doesn't have DTS or easily hookup'd to a Ipod.

totally agree with mono ---
i have 'gone $$ nuts" over some ebay grails --and had to outbid the likes
of several notorious heavy hitters :'-(

but --then there up some upsides
1. that particular quest is finally OVER
2. the box is really HERE
3. there might be other runner-up crazies to re-sell it to

so---------yes- paying to much seems outrageous-
but not completely insane

If you take a look at the number of bidders and what they bid you see that it was not just two high snipes that slammed into eachother. There are high dollar bids from multiple bidders that drove this up. It almost makes my collection look like a reasonable hobby.... almost.

The price a collector will pay all depends on his budget. For instance, I collect things other than boomboxes, like watches for example. I have paid over $25,000 for a watch I had to have in my collection. But if I ever had buyers remorse it would be very easy to get my initial investment back. If I really want a radio and have to have it my budget determines what I will pay, not the perceived value of it. High ebay auctions like that little red radio do not surprise me. Some people have memories and very strong emotions tied to those items, and you can't put a price on that....

I've dabbled in other collectibles, and have been surprised by the prices people will pay for "grails" (although it always takes a while for me to learn just what the grails are in each hobby). I've been to radio shows (there's a huge one in Lansing, Michigan, every July) and have been stunned by some of the prices, especially since my untrained eyes can't see the beauty in most of them. Same with vintage microphones. But every hobby seems to have its "most wanted," and I've gotten used to it... as well as to the fact that there are heavy hitters willing to shell out big money in every category.

When it comes to boomboxes, my spending threshold has been around $1,000, probably because, when I started collecting, that kind of money was considered insane and could get you just about anything. Not any more. So I've scaled back my wants and dreams in the last few years to whatever a couple hundred bucks (or less) can get me, and have discovered I'm very satisfied when I snag a little, colorful Sharp QT, a mid-level Panasonic, or an orphan Big Ben that nobody wanted because the owner decided it would look better with purple speaker cloth. I try not to follow the crowd anymore and find lots of pleasure in owning boxes that just zing me personally. I mean, we old guys have to think about eating and medical care in our retirement years!

Heck I just inadvertently paid $1200 for my Conion C-100F that came with the box and user's manual. It was paid for by a friend of mine who owed me slightly more than that, but I called it even - lol! I would have paid that much or maybe more for sure since it has nostalgic value for me seeing I had one when I was 18/19, and I didn't want to deal with repairs.
