A big 80's hello to all on Boomboxery, my first post!
Just a sensational site, awesome collection of prized gear.

Sitting with my CFS-9900, my Grail.

Just love the Sony gear, always wanted an FH!

Here is my CFS-9900, picked up last year, needed some work.
Replaced the Power IC amp, lots of soldering!

Just need to get the deck working, but luv it all the same.

Chasing a CFD-5 with CD inbuilt....

Gluecifer,

You've nailed it as for as I'm concerened. I am not a collector. I just have two boxes, a 777 and a cs-850. My love for these boxes has nothing to do with weather they are technically better that other boxes because they are not. It is to do with that feeling that I had when I was a kid seeing these things being carried around by old guys. I can't articulate that feeling but it was just so powerful.

When I saw the pocket calculator show and a 777 on ebay last year I almost lost control. Weird emotions and sentiments rushing back to me. Look at the reaction when Lasonic920 took his new 777 to a local bar! Boomboxes still have the power to make people react in the same way as when they see a Lamborghini; and look at the cost of those things. In a somewhat unfriendly world it gets strangers talking (I live in London). That alone merits grail status.

I agree with Glu entirely. A grail invokes an emotional response. I guess it has to sound good to maintain that status though, for instance, is the Lasonic i931 a grail? It certainly looks good but I understand the sound isn't great.

i think its quite personal gf-777z, conion c100's, and masterblasters ( yeah i know you guys say these are crap :-P ) .

i must agree the grail should be on the ' big ' size category

but maybe one or two positions on the mini category.

so there. i have no grails,

but i heard that indiana jones know s where the Real Grail is

???

Some grails can be very simple. :hmmm:
Like this SOUNDMASTER:

I think nobody would really go for it.
But it was my first boombox.
So it´s a PERSONAL grail. ;-)

Personal Grails mean sooo much.

My first was a Toshiba RT200S, must get it back off my brother in law.
He has no respect for the legacy

and love of my first.

I see grails as personal quests that don't need to be qualified by performance, cost or rarity but are instead the objects of passion and desire, and who of us really needs to justify any of our passions or desires?

PS
I spent the entire evening putting this together.. I read this thread before I opened two grail radios that arrived in the post today and it made me think a lot about why I wanted them so badly, and the happiness I had listening to them for the first time tonight. I hope this adds something to the topic!

This qualifies as response of the year!

Great thread JT-I think of a grail as a big boombox and is valuable and sounds great-altogether.
I think of a M-90,Conion C-100F, and like the PC-55.Of course so many others but these I fell fall into the 'Grail' status.
My personal favs as far as grails are:M-90,PC-55JW & C-The 777,767!
Having all of these they are grails! Need a Conion C-100F-maybe by next winter.
But my personal grail is my Sharp Gf-8989II-It's just so special to me-so many memories & the like.
Just wish I had my original one!
I think the word grail is used to loosely sometimes but again it could be about personal favs.
My must have grails to get-Toshiba WX-1 and another M-90! Of course a Big Ben-There's never enough 'grails'!!
Have a great weekend-GB. :-) :surf: :choco: :breakdance: :stereo:
