besides sound, the overall design variety...

you have a limited space to pack lots of parts and make it look attract (well sometimes not :-) )
the variety of arrangements, stylistically and functionally make it fascinating to see them ALL. when you take sound out of the equation, every box is an interesting pies of design to a greater or lesser extent. and some are just pieces of design art.

Been thinking about this for a few days!

Originally for me it was the cultural icon they are and a time that they take me back to. The more I've collected, however that changed slightly. I went through a LED meters phase where that was my favourite feature, but for the last few months it's been the ability to tune the sound based on the music you're listening to. To tune the bass, treble, graphic eq, loudness, whatever else, to bring the best out of the radio is what I love playing with the most.

Especially something like the 777 or the BigBen that allows for so many little adjustments to really bring out some wonderful sounds. Nothing beats tinkering with these settings I find while going through some favourite tape recordings.

Rock On.

You know... as I was reading these replies it really dawned on me that the Boombox is, by far, the ultimate 80's representative icon. And even though they were manufactured and sold (albeit in different evolutionary forms) starting in the 70's and well into the 90's, the ghettoblaster (esp. the big one-piece units) conjours up immediate association with 80's pop culture. One could argue that legwarmers, rubiks cube, big hair and mullets are classic 80's markers too... but the boombox is by far the coolest and most prominent...

its right up there in terms of iconic 80s technologies.
i would say without a doubt that the sheer numbers of these sold during the eighties makes it the winner.
i mean there must have been hundreds of millions of these sold back in the day. sounds like a pretty lofty number dosent it. however i am pretty sure that it is in the hundreds of millions when you add up all the different models and all the units sold in all the countries of the world.
it really was the hieght of portable audio design and in some ways the last great era of the recording industry.

Also the overall sound quality and equalizer sections are what I consider to be the most interesting elements of 80's boomboxes.
