Yeah, I got it today, my GF777 from China.

It came with a hole in the side, parts of the back cover broke off. They were inside the unit and I got them out but then the next disappointment: The radio does not tune...the knob does not move anything...it is a string jumped out of rolls but I cant seem to get it back in place.
Then one side of the speakers is very silent. It is adjustable with balance all the way to the right but the right VU meter barely moves then.
The good thing is both tape decks work but for 214 dollars plus 200 dollars shipping, this is one of the biggest disappointments I have ever had.
It goes to the repair shop tomorrow to see if it is fixable and for how much $$$$ :-/

The seller is xd62 and please never buy from him, it was described as 100% working  :'-(

It looks so perfect though...only the cracks at the side. And when I unscrewed the back cover, it turned out the screws were not really good anymore...some plastic was added in the holes to make them stay in there.
Life's unfair  And especially since I am only 17 and spent a whole lot of money on it!!! What an epic failure

The good thing is you have gotten yours out of the way  plus sounds fixable so your skills will develop. all part of the process of becoming nuts

Max, here's the GF-777 Service Manual:

http://www.mediafire.com/?51ndmhyyxir

It should show you how to reattach the tuner string.

Low volume in one channel might be fixable with DeOxit. I had a problem with my Super Woofers like that and a good cleaning fixed them. ;-)

Was the packaging suspect? You might be able to get a partial refund if you act fast. Take many pictures of it and the packaging to plead your case to the seller. :-/
Good luck repairing it. The 777 is fairly easy to work on, all the parts are laid out nicely.

DAMN! That xd62 sounds like a real piece of sh!t. I'm sorry bro. It happens to all of us sooner or later, I know it's happened to me. It's a damn shame. Good luck!

Low volume in one channel and balance not working will probably be your function switch (radio, tape, aux) just needs deoxit sprayed in it and worked up and down.

I have owned 6 of these GF 777/767's and this has been a problem on about 4 of them  EASY fix though.

Make sure you ask seller for a kickback to help cover repairs as shipping back the radio with any type of confirmation would be too costly for you. Let him know if refunds the some/most of the monies positive feedback will be left.

Hope it all works out for you.

Remember Paypal has the new buyer protection... might be some recourse (I've never used it, so I don't know the rules).

Yup... deep breath.... lesson learned.... onward and upward.... and don't give up quite so easy on your $400+

Did you pay via paypal? File a dispute. Make that seller sweat this out... And go at it with Germanic precision!

Take pics of all damages, and shoot a short video that demonstrates the sound and VU problems. Then post your images into a public web gallery (like photobucket or tinypic) and provide the links to that gallery in your ebay messages to the seller and state your case. Mediators will then also be able to see the damages and judge the misrepresentation for themselves. Tell the seller you think the box is worth something, just that it was not as represented and you grossly overpaid. Don't ask for the refund right away, see if he offers first.

The shipping to / from China is unfortunate and prohibitive, but you might at least get a partial refund to help offset some, if not all of the repair.

IMPORTANT: Only communicate via ebay or paypal dispute messaging. Do not send pics or video over email. Use the links.

And then make it your mission in life to get that box back to 100% as you can. That disappointment can turn into a good vibe over time...

keep boomin'!

with all due respect i would say i think i am a fairly real member......
i never deal with ebay and i have never been burned.
:-) :-) :-)

now with the matter at hand with the young squire who got burned.
man that really sucks big time . i mean that really is a crap deal and i am sure ebay would side with you if you file a dispute.
i think that seller has a pretty dicey hit and miss reputation.
he is making what is huge money there from people. some of them get good boxes and some dont.
file a claim .

mmcodomino, take your case up with paypal, they really do seem to be on the buyers side with most things. Take pictures and let them know how it arrived. From what I have read they usually side with the buyer. Which is good news for you. It will be worth your time.

OK. I've said it before many many times. Ebay and Paypal protects you on your purchases to the extent that YOU PAY RETURN SHIPPING. That's why I always recommend buying only from US sellers if you are in the US. To ship something back to China (or whatever continent crosses an ocean) is going to mean mega mega bucks for shipping which translates to: Broken item means deep doo doo. Bottom line -- sometimes you luck out. But if you roll the dice enough times, you will get burned and the recourse is no fun. That's why if I was buying that thing, I'd not want to pay for than $1 since the $200 shipping alone is risk enough for me on something like a GF-777 which is a thin shell box to begin with and a cracked one is no fun to look at. Also, there is typically a requirement for proof of delivery which on international shipments, is oftentimes hard to enforce. Have you priced a UPS or FedEx shipment the size of a GF-777 to china with signature confirmation? It'll probably cost you the entire purchase price + shipping.

Hey Man,

I feel your pain...I too have had something show up looking like the UPS truck ran it over and dragged it to the house! My box was in many pieces and I just couldn't bring myself to turning it in to UPS because it would go straight in the trash after that.

I spent 3 full days rebuilding it! Every tiny piece was epoxied back in place. Thankfully all the electronics were still working (I honestly don't know how). I had been warned previously that shipping these boxes will ruin them, but I just can't find them in the wild here. So I have very little choice. I mean, it's not like we can all live in CANADA! :tease:

I have a feeling, if you lay it all out on the table and take your time, that you can fix it. Be patient. Some times you have to walk away and come back to it. If you can get the structure together, the electronics can be repaired or replaced.

The only drag I suppose with my box is, it was REALLY sweet. I know I could never sell it for what I paid or what others are going for, but I don't care. This thing is going in the ground with me!

I'll say this...If you can fix it....I know you will gain some serious respect here on Boomboxery...and in the end...thats all that really matters in life!

One problem is that the value of a repaired item like that, no matter how well effected is nowhere near the value of a virgin shell. Getting back a huge partial refund is the only way it would be even remotely palletable.

The GF-777 that I shipped to Skippy -- maybe he can share how I had to pack it to ensure it arrived without damage. Maybe he has pictures of the box and how it was packaged. It's not the way the average guy will pack things.
