Warped tuner display

Been away in Manchester for few days to visit family as my Dad is very ill. Anyway to cut this short I was away for 5 days and came back monday. First thing I noticed when I stepped into my flat was how cold it felt due to no heating being on for 5 days. I decided to flick the power switch on the socket for my kitchen radio (as you do) in doing so I recieved an electric shock  made me jump a bit and got the pulse rate up. I thought this was strange as I have used it for ages with no problems. Anyway I decided to look at the radio and on doing so I noticed the cheap crappy paper tuner display had all warped. It kind of looked all wavey a bit like the Atlantic ocean if I'm honest  I presume it must have got a little damp with the kind of crappy weather here in the UK at the mo, plus the fact there had been no heat in the flat for days.

So....what box am I talking about? the one and only shitty piece of junk Philips D8134  I am not too concerned as it's only a kitchen radio but surely philips could of used a better material for the display (cheapskate). I'm just glad my d8614 doesn't have the crappy paper display the d8134 has. Here is a pic of the said box, which in all honesty sounds very good for a smallish light cheap crappy box :-) ....unisef sz5000 117.jpg

First, glad your ok after that ZAPP! Aren't you guys on 240 volts or something?

Second, Cool dual tuner bars on the Phillips! That radio has a really unique design. Also digging the speaker grills....(OK Chris shake if off).

Sorry, back to your issue. Seems like your spot on, between the moisture and the cold, it probably had something to do with it. When I first saw this thread, I thought it was gonna be wrapped tuner glass!

Seems like some Elmers glue could take care of that.

Lol yeah it's not a bad looker tbh :-) I did take the tuner perspex off as it's screwed on which is a bonus  then I used loctite glue which is awesome. Now the ocean is more of a smooth lake again

It varies wildly, the supply PD varies between 237 and 260VAC depending upon demand. I, like many UK householders, have anti surge devices all over the place but even so, I've taken a reading of 262V one day when my Dyson got even hotter than those damned things usually do!
240 is generally safer though, as it's current that does the damage to human beings and higher PD = lower current for a given amount of power, so you guys on 117V are more likely to stop your heart if you forget to sit on one hand when working on EHT devices. ;-)

Glad you got it all worked out!

I understand why you guys have surge protectors every where. I've been sapped here, it's not a good feeling
