Anyone know what all can cause the music to sound warbly. I have heard decks using rubber bands and not real belts cause this :hmmm: but can anything else

Thanks guys, belt is new, and I double checked size. And pinch roller cleaned off and seems to be firm enough on spindle :hmmm: anyone else with ideas ;-)

Too high takeup torque.
Can be caused by the takeup clutch.
Put the unit in play without a cassette and hold the takeup spindle
compare it to other good machines.

Or the supply spindle is tight.

drop of oil on capstan shaft
and pinchroller shaft.

Maybe motor shaft too.

q-tip any excess oil away.

Tried with different tapes  also I have a same spare deck. So I have switched parts and still no luck  I do know it in capstan and pinch roller because I literally held take up reel still and no change in warble :sadno: it seems tight with no slippage :hmmm: I'm stumped... I will see about little oil :hmmm:

Also the type of warble can be a clue, how the warble sounds.
I believe I have found issue. I plugged my headphones in jack and listened. The sound was perfect. Then I pulled plug out and boom sounded better. Seems like a dirty headphone jack was the problem. Thanks for all help

Haha, twas not all for nought though, TW5.
As an avid reader of this thread I fixed the warbling on my GF-535 with a rebelting and a bit of work on the pinch roller.
Thanks rockers!

Rick, so what did you do to pinch roller :hmmm: I seriously have had this deck issue and my Marantz tuner issue boggling my mind for a week. I can't believe I plug in headphones and the noise is gone... Whoo....whoooo

Hahah... lots here will cringe... but I couldn't find a way that I was confident enough to replace it so i thought I'd add some traction to it by scoring the tyre lightly with a very sharp blade. Lots of small cuts going long ways across the surface in the same direction as the capstan. The rubber on pinch rollers goes hard on the surface with age and use, this has given mine perfect traction until I can source another pinch roller. But chances are it'll just run fine for the duration.

Update..... Warble started happening again so I did same as Rick scored rubber wheel with knife, then soaked in alcohol and spread spring wider to tighten wheel on spindle and seems to be working  thanks to all for suggestions ;-) :-D

Hahah!! Awesome!
The Roller Slashing Repair works!!

Long as the cuts are only light and on the surface I can't see this doing any real damaged. Some pinch roller assemblies look like an absolute nightmare to get of the decks to replace the rubber on, I think this solution should work a treat. It's just like adding tread to a car tyre, in theory. But getting breaking up the hard rubber on the surface is a big help too.

Not looking forward to Norm getting back and reading this... I can see him rolling his eyes already! I have every intention of replacing the pinch roller eventually, Norm!!
