Rather upset. Got new stylus' for my VZ-2000, put them in and now the volume is VERY quiet. They're definitely the correct stylus, could I be putting them in wrong??
I'm not sure what's going on. Tape and radio are fine, it's quiet through headphones as well.

Any ideas?

Nothing I can see, Bill. Thanks for the idea.

I think the needles aren't sitting correctly in the cartridge. Should they 'snap' in to place?
Mine just 'sit' in there...

These are the best photos I could come up with without taking her apart.

The yellow one is the one in the door.

Hope they help.

Here are some photos of the stylus how its fitted. As you know there are small hook like bits of plastic at the top of the stylus, this has to hook under the cartridge holder. I use my thumb and forefinger to make sure the stylus snaps into place, they do click! but the red ones don't seem to......

i must admit, i bought some new stylus off ebay and two of them were faulty. The 2nd VZ i bought, gave little or no sound out of one speaker, like a plank i swopped over the complete record deck from VZ 3, turns out the stylus was shot.....

so beware of stylus, the ones i have are RED, the ones that came with the VZ's are black and have a triangle logo on them, but they cleaned up ok.

STY 123 is the correct number. Ive seen expensive ones on the net, but im not sure if they will make much of a difference, my VZ's sound ok now.

Thank YOU, Madbadger! Thank you too Docs!!

These are the ones I got (sold at numerous sites as VZ replacement styli)

Sharp-STY118.jpg

They, however, don't have the little tab to notch inside the cartridge, so they don't fit properly at all, hence the very low sound. Putting my one working black one in (same as yours in the pix) and it all works great, thanks to me properly inserting it, now you've shown me how!

I do believe I've been sold the wrong styli. Will pay the shop a visit tomorrow, and I'll take down the one I've got that actually does work. I did the order over the phone originally, and they sold me these red ones as a viable subsitute, but theres no way I can see them working properly based on the cartridge's fitting.

Thanks again Madbadger!

this is what the site says.......which is completely wrong

STYLUS FOR SHARP VZ-2000 VZ 2000 VZ2000 TURNTABLE
The Sharp VZ-2000 VZ 2000 VZ2000 turntable was fitted with a Sharp 118 phono cartridge and a Sharp STY-118 STY118 needle stylus, a photo of which is supplied above. The color of the stylus may vary from the above photo. Please verify and use this as a guide only as the cartridge and stylus may have been replaced through the years.

they are wrong in saying its a 118 phono cartridge the correct one is STY 123.........

in fact i have just emailed them to tell them their marketing is wrong.......

got my new stylus today, fitted them and she sounds great, i would recommend the stylus i shown you, i did have cheap eBay copies (red plastic) these i have got now have the A symbol on them, I've looked at both of them with a magnifying glass and you can tell the difference in quality.......worth the extra dosh and didn't have to wait that long either......

Got them!

Went down to the shop yesterday and explained the points above.
We agreed that it was a mistake from the distributor/manufacturer who listed the ones I picked up as compatible.

Irony is the actual ones I needed had been in stock and were plentiful. The ones I got in that were wrong had to be ordered in.

My VZ-2000 is now sounding SWEET and rocking beautifully! Thanks for the help guys!

I also picked up two more for my VZ-V20 that turned up yesterday!!

Thanks TSHORBA!

This, in a nutshell, means the styli I got for my VZ-2000 originally were the wrong ones, as evidenced above.

However, the ones I got and have now returned, are the CORRECT ones for the VZ-2500(V20).

I'm surprised you all didn't hear my swearing and cursing 20 minutes ago when I removed a dead stylus to find it looking exactly the same as the red ones I returned on Friday.

Oh well, at least I know I can take the other two back and get the right ones again.

What a lot of confusion!!

I hope this thread helps someone out in the future!

Ok, through my complete ineptitude I think I've screwed the turntable drive motor.
I was trying to carefully adjust the speed and all of a sudden it started playing very fast.
I now can't locate the adjustment screw and it'll only play close to the correct speed if I stick something
metal in at the right angle that it bridges something inside.

Even still it's got a bit a warbling in the speed..

So,.. I guess I need to find a new motor?

The sticker on the back of the motor says:
Sharp
BFB2B91
20929-A

I'm assuming this is something I need an exact part match for.

If anyone can give me any hope I'd greatly appreciate it as this box has been fighting me every step of the way.

Haha, thanks Chris.

I should qualify this by saying this new issue is in the VZ-2500(V20).

My VZ-2000 is working great!

After running out of ideas on my own I called my repairer dude for some help regarding the motor.

He said finding a replacement would be very hard and suggested I might be able to take the motor apart and fix it inside.

Then, while I was on the phone to him I had an epiphany that may solve my problem!

As Yoda said..

Hey Rick, how hard are the VZs to work on? I've got one in a bad state of repair but have access to getting hold of another one.

Both have issues but i'm thinking about making 1 good one from 2 bad ones. :-D

Not sure how much the other will cost me tho at this stage so don't want to spend too much on it if I'm not capable of doing the work
