I have a Vela Disco DK990 Boombox and want to use it in the States. I don't have a lead - will it be possible to buy a lead in an audio shop there?

if lead you mean by "plug" then yes. They even have universal kits if needed. look into going to Radio Shack or Best Buy. Good Luck

Be aware you may need to change the voltage on it too, depending on what country you're coming from.
U.S is 110v, depending on where you are on the planet you voltage may be 110v, 120v or 240v.
There is a little dial/selector on the back nearl the power plug you can change to make sure the power input is correct
and you don't accidentally fry your boombox.
