I drove to Des Moines yesterday to sell some car parts, along the way stopping at thrifts & antique stores..
Stopped at a unique store in Ames that had some interesting stuff.. After making a quick walkaround, I asked the lady behind the counter if she had any boombox radios?
She said "I think I might, lets check"
We walked back to what seemed like a supply closet loaded with a bunch of stuff, she said "maybe you can grab it out of there, you are stronger"
There were a lot of things piled in front of it, so all I could see was the corner of the black cabinet and the handle sticking up..
I figured it was gonna be a cheap 90's box with CD player or something, but as soon as I grabbed that handle I knew it wasn't a flimsy POS.. This sucker has some weight!
I asked her for an outlet to plug it into for testing, powered it up, messed with the switches for about half a minute, then took it to the counter to pay..
The tape deck door was sitting crooked, but she got it back into place.. Tag said Great radio $15 I told her it would FFWD but not play, so she sold it to me for 10 bucks!

As soon as I got home I tried it out in the shop, she gets pretty loud! Good sound.. threw a tape in and started testing the deck again.. Found out the reason it wouldn't play was the PAUSE button was depressed.. :dunce:
This unit isn't really beat up, just dirrrrty! I have it disassembled now for cleaning..
THe original owner engraved just about everything, speaker cabinets and all the component casings have numbers engraved next to purchaser's name..

Nice find. :w00t:
This Vector is an aka of the JVC PC-11.
I've had both and I think the Vector sounds a bit better, probably due to the eq having more settings than the PC11. :stereo:
I've never understood why people engrave their driver license number in stuff like that........ :hmmm:

Dude, that's a great find! You don't see too many Vectors out there. I first learned about them via oldskool69 (who still hasn't returned). Although the Vector is an AKA of the JVC PC-11, it totally stomps the JVC into the dirt. I'm tempted to upgrade mine with component speakers that can handle the Vector's power.

Clean it up and enjoy it!

They think the police would actually recover & return a stolen radio, like they would with a stolen car

This area of Des Moines looks familiar....... :hmmm:
Isn't there a Salvation Army Thrift store near where this truck is parked? :w00t:

It's funny you say that, this store & truck was in Ames, Iowa.. Only reason I was down that direction was to check the Salvation Army, which is now a Dollar Tree.. Circled the block and happened to catch a glimpse of that store in my peripherals..
I'm glad I stopped, but also glad I asked if they had any boomboxes in back! Otherwise I would've walked out empty handed... ;-)

I did hit Salvation Army & Goodwill in Des Moines, but nothing..not even cassette tapes!

Scored a gauge cluster for my 47' Chevy at an Antique store though..

You weren't kidding, this sucker has some power! Got it cleaned up and back together, blastin L.A. Woman through the tape deck now.. it's crystal clear! 5 on the volume scale is good indoors blastin, turn it up to 7 and it's....DAMN!! :w00t: :monchito:

I'm surprised how clean it sounds without any tweeters..? (or are those whizzer cone tweeters?) But, for some reason my left speaker has clearer highs.. you can hear the cymbals perfectly but not so much on the right speaker..

Pictures after I respray the speaker grilles..

Nice work. That's how you Blood Hound'em. You got to get in there, ask around and get your hands dirty (just by touching that one  )

Can't wait to see her all cleaned up!

Yep, those are whizzers. That's why I'm really tempted to upgrade the speakers. I can just imagine the sweet sound that comes out of it.

There was one on eBay. He/she tried to ask $250 for it. It didn't sell. I was tempted but won me a 55 instead. Now that cranks!! Did an LED mod to the tape deck lights. Sweet!! Congrats in your find. Looks good in that color.

Love how you Tricked her to get $5 off.

I ran across one of these at a local GoodWill last year but it was beat and missing parts so I never even got to hear it.
It's a good looking box, black but not the cheapy black plastic.

Yeah, that was my own fault.. When we pulled it out of the clutter, the tape door was off-hinge sitting crooked and I didn't see anything spinning when I pressed play but they did when I hit RWD/FFWD.. It wasn't til I got it home I realized the PAUSE button was pushed down! :dunce:
She just asked if the tape not working was an issue for me, I said " I kinda have a lot of cassette tapes"
Oh well, BEST $10 I spent this year!! :-D

I'm really diggin this box! Took it to work today blastin The Doors Greatest Hits through the tape deck, and I think everyone was enjoying it.. One of the guys said, "at least you have good taste in music! I know all the words to these songs"
Had it cranked up to maybe 3.5, but it was LOUD indoors!
